Is there a low-cost substitute for Chlorine Stabilizer?

Curious whether there is a TFP approved substitute for Stabilizer? I know that the 3" stabilized "hockey pucks" contain CYA and with limited use can maintain CYA, but I'm not sure what the experts here recommend. I'm considering getting a few pounds from Walmart to get started - not sure of the best way to go from <20 ppm to ~35 ppm to start the SLAM

Unfortunately there is not an alternative for CYA, however you can get it cheaper at Walmart than you can at the pool store. Walmart usually has HtH stabilizer at a pretty good price.

Pucks don't add enough stabilizer quickly enough to be helpful in a slam. Just get the HtH stabilizer, load it up in a clean white sock, tie off the sock and drop it in the skimmer with the pump running. Let it soak through and give a few good squeezes to help it dissolve quicker.

Walmart has the "case" (actually 2 one gallon bottles) of the 10% liquid chlorine for $6.44, single gallons for $3.49/gallon and their generic "concentrated" bleach (8.25%) for $2.69/gallon.

Just found this myself the other day. Threw a few single-gallon jugs in the cart because it was on the end-cap. Decided "what the heck, I'm already here..." so I ventured down the pool-stuff aisle to see what else I could find. Saw the boxes that mbaskerv mentioned tucked away on the bottom shelf. Quick math said that the boxes were the better deal - and easier to carry!
