I've been pondering this as I prepare to replace my filter in the off season. Is there any reason that you couldn't, using a standalone MPV, backwash a cartridge filter in lieu of disassembling it and rinsing the cartridges?

Backwashing reverses the flow of water into the filter. My thinking is either the cartridges are not strong enough to handle the flow, or it will force debris into the cartridge material and ruin it.

I've seen cartidges that have blown apart with reversed flow, but that's happened after they are dirty. I just figured that surely, someone has tried it.

Right about the time I got the idea to hook up an elbow and a valve to the bottom drain plug of my cartridge filter, we decided to move.

If I closed the return line the water would enter the filter housing (but not the filter) from the side and be forced out the bottom. It would at the very least wash the outer cartridge in a downward motion, and clear out the crud / sand always swooshing around but not sticking to the cartridges. Anytime I opened it there would be several handfuls in the bottom of the housing.

In my head it would be very similar to backwashing sand/DE several times to decrease the frequency of deep cleans. My cartridges can go all year, but this would be just for fun to prove.

It’s definitely on my to-do list with the new pool. Will keep you posted.
