Liquid Chlorine
When I brought my first house in 2022, it came with an above ground pool with approx 5-6k gallons. I had no idea of pool maintenance let alone all the chemistry behind how everything works with one another. The previous homeowner used the frog method with the cartridges which seemed to work fine but after I started the TFP method realized that the CYA was hovering around 90ppm. I quickly started using liquid chlorine and sometimes use the calcium shock bags from Costco HTH brand maybe 59%.

Today after 2 years, with lots of rain and a strict following of the TFP method of using only LC, slamming when necessary, I am down to somewhere between 20-30 CYA. The CYA test really subjective but I am constantly getting 20-30ppm with the test.

My question is, i am burning through a lot more chlorine now especially on sunny days as expected along with high bather loads - but for next year, if I started using pucks to add chlorine and also CYA, would this be advisable? I don’t like the idea of adding conditioner by itself since it took me almost 2 years to get the CYA where I want it.
Liquid chlorine isn’t getting any cheaper neither. I want to be able to keep my usage the same as before but also want to address how to keep my CYA at reasonable levels without too much UV burn off.

Yes you can do that. But no need to be afraid of granular stabilizer. Just calculate how much you need and add 2/3 of it and then test a couple days later to see where it landed.

Just beware the Costco tablet usually have copper in them and will be labeled “xtra blue” or some other form of “blu”. Make sure there’s no copper in them if you use them.
