So the ball valves that come from the underground piping are no longer working. One is broken and the other is leaking. I'm replacing the other piping as well, but I'm stuck on this part.
1) do I need some special pipe to connect the black underground pipes to the ball valves? Or can I use something like : Amazon.com : Hayward SP0723 Trimline 2-Way Ball Valve : Swimming Pool Filter Valves : Garden & Outdoor
Straight out of the black pipes?

2) how do I remove the ball valve and replace it from the pipe that come from the deep end? The skimmer is easier because it is still closed from the pool side from winter.. I'm worried that once I cut that valve off the water is going to start coming out from the pool.

Ditch the ball valves and use Jandy Neverlubes. Looks like you have rubber Fernco connectors between your (flexible?) PVC pipe to/from the pool and the current valves. You might want to dig down further and see what's there.

I am not sure what material the black pipe is from looking at the picture. If it is PVC like TekTube 2 in. x 50 ft. PVC Schedule 40 Black Ultra Flexible Pipe-2202200050 - The Home Depot then you can glue direct to it.

You need to see what the buildup is of the connection with the SS clamp there.

I would not install another ball valve that will fail again. Use diverter valves.

Is the water level above or below the equipment pad? If below then water should not go ruling out the pipe.

The pool is pretty much level with the filter.

From what I could figure out, the black tubing is a marine flex tube similar to this one Sierra International Shields Shieldsflex II Water/Exhaust Hose With Wire - 1-1/2" X 25'-116-250-1125 - The Home Depot

Not sure what is meant by the build-up. The previous owners glued all the threaded pipes I'm guessing to keep a leak at Bay. (Par for course on the whole house) the Black stuff that looks like it is sticking out is actually the black tubing. This tubing has wires in between the plastics (rubber or whatnot). I'm paying another picture so you can see it better I hope.

That pipe is not meant to be glued or hold water pressure. By buildup I meant that I saw a worm clamp there and not sure what fittings make up that connection. You are going to need to hack something like that until you get it leakproof. The root problem is that pipe is not the right product for the intended use.

If you are in the house for the long term then plan to repipe the pool someday.

Looks like polyethylene sprinkler pipe to me. I had a nightmare apartment pool plumbed with that once. Couldn't believe it, but some guys use it. Barb fittings and hose clamps. In my case, they switched to pvc at the risers, so it was all buried. Surprise!

@jimmythegreek This is the description from home Depot- I'll dig down further to see how much of this is there after it warms up a bit this morning!

Model #: 116-250-1125
Internet #: 309588828
Shieldsflex II Marine Water/Exhaust Hose has a black synthetic rubber tube and cover. It is reinforced with wire helix imbedded between plies of HD synthetic cord. It is resistant to exhaust fumes, ozone, mild chemicals, antifreeze and saltwater. This hose is abrasion and odor permeation resistant.
  • Double the ozone resistance required by the SAEJ2006.
  • The hose meets SAE J2006 Type R2 standards
  • Can be bent into Gradual Radius: (Flexibility 2)
  • Designed to give Excellent Service for: Straight Pipe Connector Less than 4 x I.D. of Hose, Straight Pipe Connector More than 4 x 1.D. of Hose, Require Moderate Bend
- @ajw22 having something together is par for course with this house. I'm not surprised they used the wrong product. There clamp was attached to the black tubing, with what looks like a threaded 1 1/2 grey fitting which was glued into more black piping that went into the ball valves. Guess I'll look to Frankenstein something together if this pipe goes far down in the ground.

@RDspaguy you said you have seen this before, any chance you have any opinions other than digging out and replacing the tubes? It looks as though the intake and the returns are plumbed with this.

Thank you all for helping so far!

The poly line RDspaguy is talking about is totally different and would be better off in this case. That stuff should never have been used I wonder what the rating is for pressure. I would think as a temporary fix barbed fittings and double clamps would work just like poly line is done on repairs.

Excavate the area to see how much of that black hose is there and try to replace it with PVC piping. As for the valves, I can only recommend Jandy valves. They are full port, where most PVC ball valves are not, and they are rebuildable. This will eliminate you from having to cut anything up when the valve leaks or handle breaks.

So i dug down and found the rigid black pipe about 6 inches down. Both the skimmer and the deep end connect to the rigid pipes underground. How would I go about fixing this properly? Can I use the PVC joins to add more PVC? Or is that a no no in underground piping?

If its rigid then yes you need to tie into that and its not a no-no to do it underground, its necessary. I've never seen rigid black pool piping so maybe its ABS? That would require different glue possibly. I'm sure someone smarter than me can chime in on that one.
