How do I join 1 1/2" copper to pvc

You could also use a large size sharkbite fitting like this - 1-1/2" X 1-1/2" FNPT, SB114140F Sharkbite Fittings.

I know I'll be skinned alive, but I never use primer or cleaner. What I do, is take a roll of paper towels with me. I swab the pipe and fitting with all purpose cement, then wipe it off with a paper towel after a few seconds, then re-swab them and make the joint. By doing that, the glue acts as both primer and cleaner, and it saves from having multiple cans with you. I've been doing it this way for more years than I care to remember, and have never had a joint leak on me.

I'm in no way downing people who use primer and cleaner, I just don't find a need for it. Keep in mind that some localities REQUIRE the use of purple primer on PVC plumbing in order to pass inspection. In those cases, you pretty much have to use it. The inspectors look for the purple stains on the piping.

Primer cleans and chemically etches the surface which is fairly similar to sanding. Primer dries almost instantly. It is some type of alcohol based chemical.

I didn't know they made shark bites that big, I would be inclined to go with those.

That's a great fitting - no soldering. Yes, good to know about the slip on plastic one. The copper takes up a little less room unless the plastic one connects directly to 2". I just emailed them about that. This TFP site is amazingly helpful! - because of all of you who take the time to be helpful.
Thank you,

My only add would be. If you are using a female brass/copper fitting and screwing a male into it, Use Sched 80 fitting for that. The threads on a sched 40 male are not that strong, and will be the first thing to fail with any movement.
