Help! High CYA/Switching to this from pool store testing and chemocals

Also when I am testing chlorine, sometimes I add a drop and the water goes from the pink to clear but then I swirl it and within a few seconds it is turning back to slightly pink. Does that mean I should add another drop or count at the current number because it turned clear for 3 seconds?

Have the pump running 24/7 during the slam. If you have a SWG, then turn it off (but I don't think you have one, right?).

If it was really clear after a good swirl, then I'd take that as the reading. It usually turns light pink again after a while, but 3 seconds sound a bit fast.

For the purpose of maintaining slam level, I would rather opt for the lower FC reading than the higher one, and add another gulp of chlorine should that lower reading be below slam level.

EDIT: see next post, I forgot that you are still doing the OCLT

Sorry, just went back a page and realised that you are still doing the OCLT, not yet slamming. Then follow what Marty said regarding pump run times. The important bit is that the pump runs for at least 30 min before taking the FC reading tonight and in the morning so your water is well mixed.

Add another drop and see if it stays clear for longer. You might be right inbetween. Just remember that when comparing with the reading in the morning to work out the chlorine loss.

That's interesting. You added 10ppm worth of chlorine (right?) last night, but it went only up to 1.5ppm. How long after your last bleach addition did you test FC last night? But then it stayed at 1.5 over night. Not quite sure what to make of that, but I'd say you're up for a Slam, just because all that bleach didn't get your FC above 1.5, and quite some CC. How does your water look like?

Have another read through the slam article that Marty linked earlier, bring your pH to 7.2 and start the slam.

Yep two gallons of 12.5 percent bleach. Tested about a half an hour to an hour after adding that second gallon last night. And then my CC went up? My pH was at 7.5 yesterday. Is that ok to start SLAMing? Water looks totally clear! What do you think?

And just scrub anywhere I may find algae?
Also this is what pool math says, is this correct? 2 and 1/2 gallons chlorine? And then just so I understand the SLAM method. I test often but no more then every hour? Then if I test two hours after adding the 2 1/2 gallons chlorine, do I add again based on the SLAM method with my CYA to suggested amount of chlorine for SLAM level? And do that every time I test? Then do I do a OCLT each night and once I pass, I stop? Run filter the entire process and don’t add anything else, just the chlorine?

It would help if you populated your Poolmath app with your current test data. To help you on your chemical adds knowing your current chemistry values is important.
You will add chlorine to reach your SLAM level FC. Then test again in a few hours and add more chlorine to get back to SLAM level FC.

Brush brush brush. Especially any hiding areas.

OK - I now see your calculation page. That is correct.

Yes. Record your data in the app. You need to be a Premium subscriber to store historical data. See my data, just touch my Member name and then Poolmath Logs. Really helps us help you. Just like filling out your signature. Really helps us help you.
