Pump finally died! super 2 pump started smoking during a major rain storm a week ago.

I posted this question a few years back when I was seriously thinking about replacing it.
But decided to wait, big mistakes. These Hecking pool pumps have doubled in price since that post.

Hayward Super II Pump is a 1.5 HP pump. We have a spa that's above the pool with a single water fall (1 foot wide) and flows into the main pool.
We have a G3 barracuda pool cleaner that's connected directly into the skimmer.

Heres the breakdown to avoid as many questions as possible
1. Our city offers a $400 rebate for any VS pump as long as it's purchased in a store within our city limits. $200 online
2. No one uses our pool, I mean no one for over a decade.
3. We don't use any of the pool equipment except the pump/filter. I don't know if our heater works. I don't know if the spa booster pump works.

  • Voltage - do you need the pump to run on 120V or 240V?
  • Automation - do you care about automation interface now or in the future?
  • HP - any VS pump of 1.5 HP or greater will do for you. A larger HP VS pump will be more energy efficient running at a lower HP. So for maximum energy efficiency get a 3 HP pump.
  • Color - Pentair pumps come in Pentair almond or black
  • Availability - Many pumps are in short supply. Get what you find available.

Voltage: We have a main break box in front of all the pool equipment that controls the power feed into the pump with a gcfi outlet.
I don't know how to answer the 120v or 240v question. I'm assuming I can take both. But probably 120V?

Automation: Our house is automated, but the pool isn't. But it may be automated one day. The only thing I could think of automating is the pool lights, and I would rather depend on lutron to handle that automation if needed. We have two switch under the power box that controls the lighting for both the pool and spa.

HP: The poolstore rep said the same thing. Since my pump is a 1.5 HP, 2.5 or 3 HP pump would give me better efficiency over a 1.5 HP pump. But the question is how much extra am I going to spend versus the amount of saving i'll get.

Color: I don't give a Darn, seems obsessive to care.

Availability is also a factor it seems even in 2023/24. The pool store recommended two pumps.

011533 @ $1900 Pentair-011533-WhisperFlo-Variable-Speed
022056 @ $2100 IntelliFloXF VSF. But I don't get the $400 discount from the city.

Pool rep kept pushing whisperflow. I kept insist IntelliFlo. He really didn't give me many options. It seems like a slow time of the year, and they don't exactly stock too many pumps.

I need your recommendations.
I want something that works and lasts, is quiet. And If we can save money on our power bill. Great.

Edit: I also want to mention, I don't have an issue trying to find another Super pump 2. And bringing it into California regardless if it's deemed illegal to have one. Heck California and their eco-friendly laws. I'm seriously consider doing that seeing how expensive pumps are now.

You might try a Nidec Neptune NPTT225 motor, a Go Kit 2 (seal, O rings, etc.) for about $700.00. Or a Calimar 3hp VSP for a little over $500.00 and a replumb.

I would be inclined to go with the 3hp calimar suggested above.
& spring for the $99 3 year extended warranty with the rebate $$.
They ship pretty fast from Texas
You probably know this but..
While you wait for your replacement pump keep the fc up (mix it in with a brush or a submersible pump) & brush/skim the pool to keep things from getting too funky.

I don't see myself getting some off brand, Chinese pumps. I spent all day yesterday, looking up Calimar. One guy mentioned their customer service doesn't exist. And someone else mentioned to keep their parts in stock to do a quick rebuild. I don't have time for that nonsense.

I just want something that works. I'm kinda focused on Pentair.

+1 to the new motor and seal kit for your current pump. Parts will be available for your Super II for a LONG time, and a new variable-speed motor will (probably) be quieter and certainly more energy-efficient, especially if you run it at a slower speed, but note that any waterfall from your spa to the pool will also slow down (you don't want it dribbling down the pool wall). You may want to upgrade the impeller and diffuser if you get a higher HP motor to help keep an adequate flow.

The Nidec motors are very nice and very programmable - and your city may still give you the rebate for just the motor.

Understandable,
but note that pool supply unlimited is a brick and mortar store that has great customer service & handles the warranty for the calimar products they sell. That said, its better to go with one that you feel comfortable with & don’t expect to ever need the warranty for if you can afford to do so. Pentair is certainly a great option.

Dude, Do you have a stake in the company? With all due respect. Who gives a Crud about some random brick and mortar store. I can buy locally as well and get all the support I need. Plenty of locations in California that are not in Texas. Plenty of stores and plenty of pools In California. Why the need to keep shilling for some random business in Texas is truly baffling.

I'm all about supporting good businesses, that take care of their customers. But you're seriously reaching. If someone asks for a place to buy, then you can suggest whatever you want. But I didn't. I'm perfectly capable of finding a location to sell me a pump.
I see way too many people on here shilling for 1 or 2 locations that sell pool equipment.

They are all off-brand Chinese pumps. Just some of them have On-Brand US labels on them :)
No they are not. What kind of logic is that? Iphones are made in china... do you consider them off-brand Chinese phones?

I feel like this website has become one big salesman convention on pushing random Rear products on very specific pool store locations.

I respect this place because of how friendly and active the community is. But things have for sure changed around here. The big time helpers from 2-3 years don't seem very active anymore. Mostly just a bunch of pool sales reps or salesman in general.

Calimar, Black and Decker and Circupool seem to all come from the same Chinese company that OEMS their pumps. Seems like lots of profits to be made for all these online stores and sales reps. Which is what this website has basically become.
I'm sure the pumps are probably fine for a while, 3 years, hopefully. Then what?

I want to thank everyone for their responses. I said it flat out 2 separate times, I'm not interested in anything but Pentair.
RIP to troublefreepool, once a great website.

@TFP_Addict
Sorry you felt triggered by our recommendations.
Your initial post mentions how expensive pumps have become & the two choices you were offered by your local store.
We mentioned other more affordable options that may fit your situation as it seemed that’s what you were seeking. Alternatives to the options you were presented. Apparently we all misunderstood your request and you were just wanting to know which one of the two pentairs to pick?
FWIW I am just a mom with a pool who has had a good experience with a helpful business & wanted to reiterate that the option I mentioned is in fact a known reputable business. I am not a shill. Nor are any of the other posters. While some may work in various aspects of the pool industry, we are still Just people who volunteer our time & knowledge here on this forum to help others & follow strict guidelines to do so.

+1. While I have flagship equipment myself, they have all priced me out since. I wouldn't replace my pump and filter at $2k+ each. (Although the pump has dipped a little below that at the moment).

So many of us have looked towards the companies building comparable products at 3X less cost. They are holding up just fine for members so far and most things fail quickly if they're going to.

You may certainly have a different opinion and stick with the flagship brands. Everyone was just trying to help as we do, and meant no harm/disrespect.

So go buy a Pentair. Why ask for suggestions if you've already made up your mind ?

- This !
Your entire original post revolved around cost :
You want the rebate from your local Energy Supplier.
You complained about the costs doubling since you last looked.
You balked at spending any extra on a bigger HP pump vs 'saving' from the Variable speed
You don't care about color.
Your main complaint about the Intelliflow is you don't get the $400 rebate - so focusing on cost again.
You state you want something that works, lasts, is quiet, and that saves money on the bill.
Your last edit again commented on the expense.

FWIW - I have the 3HP Calimar 'chinese off-brand'. It's super quiet (like, I can't hear it running most of the time), its super efficient (<400watts at 2500 RPM), inoffensively black-grey colored (the B&D one is dayglo orange...yuck). It is 220v only, so that may be a functional issue for you, but your existing pump may already be 220v, and you will need to understand that whatever pump you get prior to installing it. The 1.5HP version is $100 or so cheaper. It checks all your boxes other than it being 'a chinese off brand'.

So, if you want the cheap option, buy a Calimar 3HP at Pool Supply Unlimted with the 3 year warranty (they appear to be the only ones offering the add-on warranty, which is why people suggest them for that pump option...) You'd still get the $200-ish rebate offered by Burbank Power and Water (available for online purchases), and your total cost would be less than the rebate you're complaining you wont get on the Intelliflow...

Or just go buy the Intelliflow. Makes no difference to me, I don't get paid by anyone to recommend anything. I work for a Fortune 500 Bank...they don't really do much in the Pool industry.
