Hayward Sand Filter Set up Question

Hi
I am in the middle of my new pool build, the pool builder sent over a sub to set up the pool equipment a few days ago. The communication was not great due to language barrier. With regard to the filter, it is a Hayward , Pro Series High Rate Sand Filter Model S310T2.

The PB had dropped off a pallet of bags of glass media , salt etc. long ago. When they set up the filter I watched them pour 6 out of 8 50lb bags of Vitroclean Green Glass media into the filter equaling 300lbs. If I read the bags right the filter uses 80% of what is called for if using glass media and not sand ? The chart on the Hayward one sheet says that model requires 500lbs of sand.

Once they left I also read on the bags it was recommended adding pea gravel or Vitroclean Pebble base to cover the filter laterals. I did not see them do this and there were never any bags of gravel on the pallet from the PB. Is this an issue that they skipped doing gravel ? If so, what is the fix? What about them only adding in 6 bags =300lbs? I have two bags they did not use. The electricians have not yet hooked up the power for the equipment .

Another question, I am very new to all of this , I have no idea what each piece of equipment does , how they all work together etc. I know this site is a great and a vast resource, where is the best place to look on the site to educate myself on the very basics of how a pool works and the function of various pieces of the pool and equipment?

Looking forward to your feedback !

The gravel is an option you don't really need. Is the Glass media already in your filter?

Oops I see it s. I am not familiar with startup for Glass media so I'll let others chime in.

Please read "Pool Care Basics" up in Pool School. It'll get you asking lots of questions and we'll all help!

Vitroclean's literature indicates you multiply the required weight of sand by .80 and Hayward's manual says 500# sand. That means the rest of the Vitroclean should have been put in the filter.
Also, from Hayward's manual on that filter:
"Carefully pour in correct amount and grade of filter sand, as specified. Sand surface should be leveled and should come to about 6 “ from the top of the filter tank. Use no more than the recommended amount of sand."

The filter should be started in backwash for the first time for about a minute, then a 30-second rinse and you should be good to go. You may end up with a small amount of very fine material getting into the pool after that, but it usually won't hurt anything and will get picked up after you get a cleaner going in the pool after a start-up.
