Original heater. probably only ran it a couple of times a year. Ran it last weekend, wouldn't heat the spa any higher than 95 degrees. Pool company says it's too old and I just need to replace the heater. They were out here this week (brought me a new booster pump) So questions I guess are :

Should I attempt to repair or is it just too old? and if not
Do they even produce this heater any longer(only one that I have found is here www.inyopools.com/Products/02200465000667.htm and it shows out of stock. and
If I need a new heater what should I replace it with? I hate to just go with what the pool company suggests without asking for opinions from this forum first.

Its pretty old as it is original equipment installed in 2007 with Goldline Aqualogic automation.

Depends how comfortable you are working on the heater.

The Installation, Operation, & Service Procedures for the H250IDL2, H350IDL2 & H400IDL2 can be found here. Troubleshooting begins on page 36.

Check the thermal control valve and the bypass valve for proper operation.

H400FD or HDF400 are the current Hayward heaters. Or you can consider the Pentair MasterTemp 400 or Raypak Avia heaters. Heaters are a commodity and they are all similar in design and operation.

@swamprat may have ideas.

A 17-year-old heater is basically end of life in most cases, but not all. Just because it doesn't heat past 95 doesn't mean that is the case for you. Why doesn't it go beyond that is the question? Does the heater stop heating on its own or does the automation turn it off at that temperature? What is the heater setting, 104 as it should be? If the heater is set to a lower temp than the automation, it will shut down at that temperature.
If you want a new heater, and want to stay with Hayward, their series is now the W3H xxx FDN.

I had it set at 104. It would cycle on and off @95 (like it thought 95 was 104). The temp sensor is reading correctly I think. I have checked it against hand held devices. I will say that it was 30 degrees and the wind was blowing very hard, but I have heated that spa previously under those conditions so ....

"What is the heater setting, 104 as it should be?"

The only setting I know of it through the automation.

Not sure which temperature sensor you are referring, the heater's internal one or the water-tempo one for the automation. When the heater turns off at 95, what does the display on the automation read? Its not unusual for a water-temp sensor to "almost" work, give correct readings for a while, but as they approach the higher temps they go bad. Of all the parts that may be needing replacement, those are among the least expensive. At the bottom is one on Amazon from Wholesale Sensors that works well and is only $15.00. Very easy job.

The automation uses its own temperature sensor to open and close a small, low voltage relay, that allows control power to continue to operate the heater. Basically it just hooks two wire together to allow the heater to use its internal thermostat and all safety items to do their job.

Right now, the display should show "bO" which means "bypass operation" giving control over to the automation. that doesn't tell you to what the heater's temperature is set.

From the manual: "bO - This is a normal display when heater is being controlled by a remote thermostat. No service is required. If heater is not being controlled by remote thermostat, change setting by using the MODE key to put the heater into STANDBY. Press and hold the DOWN key and then press and hold the MODE key. HOLD down both keys for 3 seconds until the indication "bo" is removed from the display."

Once you do that you will be able to set the temp to 104 if it isn't already. Follow the instructions just as written to go back to "bO."
