So I bought 2 Chinook hop roots, not sure what they are called. I plan to grow them in 2 half whiskey barrels one on ea side of a screened in Gazebo.
Am I creating a monster? just thought they look nice but worried they might attack and ruin the screen fabric.

Since you are growing in a container you can limit spreading. if they go to seed remember mother nature will send them where ever you do not want them.

They should look great though, A lot of harvestable crops can look great in a small container setting!!

I moved from Iowa, and most hop varieties do reasonably well there, but certain ones like Cascade do grow like weeds. Compared to other plants there, though they are relatively tame. I planted Centennial and got nothing for two years. Only when selling my house did I have something I could have brewed from. Oh well. You should be fine, prune off any that becomes a problem. I used to live 20 miles north of Cedar Rapids, so same sort of weather as Cedar Falls.

They are called rhizomes, btw. That guarantees you got a female plant, which you want if you are going to use the hops for brewing.

Arizona huh! been trying to get the wife to leave the winters here for that same place, no luck. Planted them in containers about 3 weeks ago, showed very slow growth, now about 1" a day.
Do they like dry or moist soil? have been getting a lot of rain but with containers as with raised bed gardens, they do dry out faster than direct soil placement.

They like it like the climate of the pacific northwest, so I would say wet and partially shaded. They are peculiar in that they need a hard freeze yearly so even though they do grow them here in Arizona I am about 2000' too low to likely have any success here.
