First Winter as a Pool Owner in Charlotte, NC - Approaching Overnight Freezing Temps...

Hey guys,

I'm a first time pool owner (bought the house in July) and approaching our first winter here in Charlotte. Since we're in a moderate climate and rarely go below freezing for extended period of times, there doesn't seem to be a consensus about closing or leaving pools open for winter. I've talked to multiple people who do both.

On the advice of our pool cleaner, we are keeping ours open. My plan is to run the pump overnight to keep water moving during the coldest hours. We also have freeze protection set to 35C. Is this a sufficient plan? I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row since we'll be out of town for 3 weeks in December and don't want to stress about this.

Additional question - would there be any downside to just running the pump 24 hours (besides the electric bill?) I have a pretty old single speed pump so the options are really just on or off.

Thanks!
