Having completed a backwash today (mainly to drain the level as we have had lots of rain)...I just noticed a small stream of water flowing out of a vertical seam on the main filter body, just below the valve clamp...maybe 3/4 inch. Hayward High Rate Sand Filter, Pro Series. It shoots out 3-4 feet horizontally. It's not coming from the clamp holding the filter value onto the top of the body....as the picture shows it's coming directly from the seam on the filter body. To stop the leak: My first inclination is use something like JB Weld to cover it from the outside. Other ideas? A better product to use?

I have unions providing the PVC connections in and out of the filter...so to pop off the six-position "Vari-Flo" value is pretty easy. It may be best to patch the leak from the inside....yes? And of course, replace the valve tank O-ring while I am at it.
It would seem this is a problem that has been seen before. That vertical seam on the side of the filter body just screams out "I'll leak at some point in time".....And to be honest, I have not removed the filter valve in over four years to stir the sand, and clean it out....sounds like something to do after closing.

ouch....since I have already covered the pool (but not the spillover spa) I'll assume it's OK to set the valve to bypass temporarily. This way I can continue to make FC till hard close. Water temp is still +82, but the leaves are falling. I checked the Hayward manual, it calls out 2 different sizes...S310T2 and S360T2....the manual does list the replacement tank assembly part numbers for each, minus Oring and valve. I'll buy a new valve clamp also. I'll need to figure out which filter size I have because I want an absolute drop in identical replacement. I don't see dimensions listed in the manual.

Measure the diameter of your tank. S310T2=30 inch diameter. S360T2=36 inch diameter. Often times the sticker on your tank will have a punch hole indicating which filter you have installed.

The circumference is easier to measure than the diameter.

Or, just look at the label.

S310T2 = 4.91 sqft area, 7.855' circumference (7'10-1/4"), 2.5 feet Inside Diameter (30"). Actually, the OD is 30.5" when you account for the plastic thickness, which makes the outside circumference 7.98' (7'11-13/16").

S360T2 = 7.1 sqft area, 9.45' circumference (9'5-3/8"), 2.5 feet Inside Diameter (36"). The OD is 36.5" , which makes the outside circumference 9.55' (9'6-10/16").

Thanks for the tip....I'll look into it. My goal was to find an identical tank vessel replacement, with no plumbing changes. Easy DIY. I have unions and it would be easy. My filter is 10 years old and so far it looks like MY tank is discontinued. I went to the Hayward website and left them an email. I have almost always used a sand filter. Many years ago I had a DE filter, and recharging with DE was a bit of a pain. I like the convenience the sand filter offers over DE. I'll read up on why a cartridge is better. I'm sure it's on this site somewhere. My pool is in a wooded area, so leaves are always a problem 24/7/365 (even with the cover on and the pool closed). Thus, the granular purity of a few smaller microns that a DE filter might provide means little in my case.

JamesW: Thanks for the excellent data. So, being an Engineer, I was looking at the MANUAL...and the model numbers in the manual are much different than the one printed on the label on the filter. Aaaaargh!!!!!
The label on the vessel says Model Number is: S244T2.... I went looking on the web for a vessel replacement, thus far I am finding out of stock at several pool supply stores and eBay. The manual lists the "filter tank assy less valve and clamp" as either SX310AA1 or SX360AA1.

Like I said, the first goal is a replacement of only the tank vessel to keep the DIY plumbing easy...but keeping in mind also I must say the valve is pushing 8 years old.

I have a six port valve, but the model number starts with an SP07 (does that infer a 7 port?) ....not too clear after that...Wish they'd learn how to use more Permanent Labels :) And their model number system is goofy to me.

After searching thru about 30 websites where S244T2 filter (24"/2" PVC) was seen to be discontinued, I found this:

I do think this is a pin-for-pin drop-in replacement for my current filter. Price in line with expectations. Free shipping.

There are two models, a W3S244T and a W3S244T2.

I do not know what the difference is between the T and the T2 model, but I do not think that it is anything to be worried about.

The dimensions should be the same.

You can get the T model or the T2 model.

It looks like the T2 has a 2" valve, which is what you have.

Hayward Pro Series Pool Sand Filter, 24" Tank, Top Mount 2" Valve - W3S244T2.

Looks like the "T" is 1.5" pipe fitting, T2 is 2". I prefer 2"....for the exact replacement desired. And I'm assuming it's a higher price than the 1.5".

So, I can use the Home Depot filter with my old valve...or spend the extra $80 and get a new valve with desired size. I think it is $80 well spent given the labor I will exert to install it.

These both appear to be 6 port valves....which I fine. I know how to put a six-port in the WINTER position. LOL.

Is any of the old sand reclaimable? I'll need 300 pounds total. I see it for as low as $9 on the internet per 50 pounds...I know my local pool store will be 2X that.

Awesome, you just saved me $80...that certainly warrants another donation to TFP
Thanks for seeing it that way. It's how I became a "Goldie." When I added up all that TFP saved me, I had to pony up. I probably should have given them more.
