Dollar General Concentrated Bleach

In reality bleach is only manufactured by a few suppliers in the US and the only thing that’s different is the label (that’s true for a lot of mass-manufactured goods). Clorox, the industry leader, has switched all their bleach to 6% and has added Cloromax Technology to it (it’s a polymer additive that’s supposed to make the bleach work better to keep fabrics cleaned). In off-brand bleach, Cloromax is often referred to “Fabric Protection Technology”. It’s likely the Dollar General bleach will eventually move to that as well.

You’d be better off finding a source of pool-grade liquid chlorine (10% to 12.5%) as that has shown to be the most cost effective so far..

Last year I bought most my bleach at DG. Their concentrated bleached was 8%ish. Went yesterday and their regular bleach and concentrated bleach both show 6% on the label now. Typo or con job? Anybody else notice this?

It's the same thing at Walmart. I found 12.5% pool shock at menards for about 4.00 and they some times do a buy on get one free sale.

Yeah I confirmed this 6% issue the other day with Stop and Shop Brand, Wal-Mart Great Value Brand, and even. Clorox. They are all advertising and charging the price for concentrated, but it is still only 6% sodium hypochlorire. Plus to add insult, the fl. Oz. Is only 121 fl. Oz. My local Wal-Mart is out of 10% pool essentials. Why are all the manufacturers ripping everyone off?

Can anybody say New Coke?

They only came out with 8.25% bleach a couple of years ago. Before that it was 6% and a gallon jug. They reduced the bottle size when going to 8.25% purporting it to be the same cleaning power of a gallon of 6% (it wasn't). Now that they've got everybody used to 121oz bottles they reduced the concentration back to 6%, but left the jug size at 121oz.

I am trying to figure this out.

If I buy 12.5% Chlorine in case (4 gallons) and I pay $15.00 per case that is $3.75 a gallon. If it was 6% it would be $1.875 per gallon as there would be effectively 2 gallons of 6% in every 1 gallon of 12.5%.

If it is $20 per case that would be $5.00 per gallon. If it was 6% it would be $2.50 per gallon as there would be effectively 2 gallons of 6% in every 1 gallon of 12.5%.

IF that is right and ignoring the 8.25% or 10% that may or may not be available when I am at the store and the reducing how much they are packaging now of 8.25% but less of it and so on.

Why not just buy the 12.5% Pool Chlorine and be done with it? Is it the hunt of a good deal? Even paying $1.00 more across 12 gallons of 12.5% which is effectively 24 6% gallons doesn't seem worth the chase and frustration of the Bleach companies adding things or reducing their sizes.

I am sure I am missing something because everyone is chasing Bleach around their towns like the Cabbage Patch kids of the early 80s. But I am struggling to see the value of that mission.

Not to mention and I will throw this out there, the extra use of plastic that we hope gets recycled.

Thanks,

It is because in many areas you cannot find 12% at that good of a price. So the household bleach was actually the best deal sometimes even better than 12% if it was available. But now with household bleach giving you less for the amount of money spent The Pool Store bleach is becoming much more attractive.

I gotcha. Yeah my old timer that works out of his garage has good prices, so I have just always bought my stuff from him. One stop shop and he usually throws in a good story for free.

Here in central Ms I can’t find a pool store or anyone else that sells 12% or 10% for that matter in bulk of any kind so I have to use the 6% that Walmart DG sells. Sometimes I can one gal 10% at Walmart but it goes about as fast as it comes in. I would love to be able to buy in bulk. Not sure it would be worth checking on line or not. Such is small town life

Go on to Dollar tree. One case -4 in a case $400. It may be free shipping after $99 check it out. If you can get it delivered that’s better then going to the store and buying every gallon every week. Good luck

Consider finding an industrial chemical supplier. My cost after tax is $64 for a 55gal drum of 12.5%. The attached COA shows this batch was actually 12.87%. The past two summers I was able to get 55gal drums of 50% for $175. Look up industrial chemical suppliers in your area and you may be surprised at what you find.
