Do pools have an overflow mechanism?

Do pools have an overflow mechanism of some sort? I ask because I over filled my pool almost all the way to the top of the rim. I thought no worries. Tomorrow I will vacuum and backwash the filter like crazy. The next morning it was down to about the 3rd screw on the slimmer box. The filter was not running overnight.

It's possible. I'd say it might even be probable if you live somewhere that gets a lot of rain.

Look around the pool. See if there are any mystery grates about water level. If you have an autofill, there may be an overflow in the filler well. Or inside the skimmer. Look for any unexplained open pipes inside them.

Our previous pool had an overflow port inside the skimmer housing, just above the basket. Took me a year before I even noticed it, and another year to figure out what it was.

Here in Florida every pool I've seen has an overflow at the back of the skimmer. Basically just a hole in the back with 3/4" PVC plumbed out of the pool and usually down into the gravel bed under the pool. In my pool it will drain the high water down to 1" above the center of the tile (2" down from the coping). Definitely required during the summer deluges we get.

Same thing for me, no overflow. We've been getting pounded with rain and still have almost a week of rain left to go.

I actually bought more CYA because of all the draining I'll be doing. I've been draining by opening the filter pressure relief valve, is this ok or is there a better way?

FIU: Isn't there a "backwash" valve on your equipment pad that lets you basically pump water out at the pool much faster? Usually on a 1.5" PVC pipe. That's how you'd drain the pool if necessary.

However the pool gets drained, there's no getting around the CYA, CH, and salt being diluted.

I don’t see any holes in the skimmer box except the one going to the pump. And then my lovely flex hose buried in concret pops out of the concret to the filter. Nothing out of the ordinary going on there except the flex hose under ground. Arg!!

I tried ti to take a close up of the inside of of the skimmer. Should there be caulk around it? It looks like there might have been some at one time.

My overflow isn't in the pool. About 2-3 ft away from the edge of the pool, in the concrete deck, there are white plastic grates with drainage pipes under the grates. So my pool has to overflow completely before it gets rid of excess water manually. Unfortunately, those pipes drain at the same place where my other pipes come out of a concrete wall below the side wall of the pool. I will never know if my pipes are leaking or if it is the overflow drains draining water.
