Do I need to add a second main drain?

Our pool is set to be re plastered and we were told we needed to add a second main drain. We currently have one drain and our pool is over 40 years old. I know we could probably argue that this was built before the Virginia Act now requiring two but should we add the other drain? Does it make a big difference/worth the money? Can I just get a really good cover or do something else to help the suction of the one drain? We have two skimmers.

No you do not need to add a second suction inlet to be VGBA compliant. VGBA does not apply to residential pools.

This describes how you can make your pool VGBA compliant if you want to...

You can install a SVRS vacuum release on your pump. It does not require a new pump.

I,

I have had two pools re-plastered.. In both cases the salesman told me a second drain was "required".. I asked to see the proof.. Suddenly it was only "suggested" not required.

Both my pools still have the single drain with a VGBA drain cover..

Make them prove it..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Some local codes might require an additional drain for a remodel, but you should ask for the exact quote from the code to be sure.

In lieu of a second drain, you might be ok to add a vac alert type device if the code allows.

You can abandon the drain if you want.

You could also replace the drain with an unblockable drain, but that requires cutting the floor to install the drain fixture.

If a second drain is not required by code, all they legally have to do is make sure that the cover grate is a certified approved cover.
