My pool, pump, and filter was already here when I moved into my house, and now 10 years later I'm replacing the pump and filter for the first time. My old pump had a filter basket attached on the inlet side. I bought a new pump, but it came without a filter basket attached. Is it necessary to have one? Is there a cost effective way to buy one by itself?

New pump is a Vevor 1/2 HP 110 volt 0.37 kw.

Pool is 14x20 ft, 7000 gallons, vinyl above ground pool.

If you purchased this pump then yes you need a strainer basket. You could try and cobble something together with a separate pump pot like this, but it will be easier just to return that pump and get one with a proper pot installed. Something like this one may suit you, but frankly after working on some Vevor handrails I’d wouldn’t use anything from them, but it’s your money and your call.

Looks like the Vevor pump does not have a basket. Having a basket is a safety measure to prevent something getting into the pump and/or filter that is going to challenge to remove or jam up the pump. With baskets in the skimmer and pump, anything that makes it past the skimmer basket is caught in the pump basket.

Is it an absolute necessity to have a basket on the pump, no. But it does make it much easier/safer to empty the skimmer baskets and not worry about something getting into the pump or filter that shouldn't. You will just need to be more careful when emptying the skimmer baskets to try and not let debris get to the pump.

I am sure there are some inline screens and can be plumbed in but the Vevor 1 hp 80 gpm with a basket might have been a better choice (not sure if it would be to much pump).

Are pumps made by XtremePowerUS any good?
I've seen other members on the forum with them. Much like opinions on car manufactures, to each their own. Big names are fine, but they have their issues too. You might try doing a search here on the forum for that make/model and see more discussions if it helps.
