DIY spa (hot tub) UK build - advice

Hey everyone from across the pond!

Over in the UK there's a flood of fibreglass hot tubs that seem to be marketed on the amount of jets they have. I've been in plenty but rather than spend upwards of £5k for something that's going to be past its best in a few years I wanted to build one instead.

Trying to find a 'how-to' guide on the internet has proven really difficult and I've been a phone call away from ordering the 'custom built spa' material several times now but stopped myself at the last minute because I don't know how worthwhile it'll be for me in the UK with UK materials and fittings.

Anyhow, you guys in the states are far ahead of us in the UK when it comes to pools and spas so can anyone point me to any resources (step by step guide or plans etc) that might be able to help.

A stand alone fiberglass spa/hot tub/jacuzzi over here costs about $3000-$4000 (including wood base/surround). They are generally plug-in (120v here, 240 volts over there), fill it yourself, heat with an electric heater. Once you go up to a wood tub, gas heat, etc, the sky's the limit. What kind of setup were you thinking and where in the UK are you?

Thanks for your response.

I want to build a block spa - not buy a pre-built hot tub.

I'll build off of a 6-8" insulated slab, block cavity walls filled with insulation, internally screened then tiled. I'd plan for the filter and heat pump(s) to be in a separate brick built housing and I'd buy an 'off the shelf' controller.

This is just off the top of my head so I don't know if there are any 'step-by-step' guides or technical plans that I could follow. A mentioned, I was going to buy the 'Custom Built Spa' material - How to build your own Hot Tub- Custom Built Spa but I wasn't sure if the general information was already available elsewhere or if some professionals could point me in the right direction. I don't know about what jets, how many, placement, tub size etc etc etc.

I figure that a block spa will last far longer than one of these fibreglass hot tubs and it should also be cheaper in materials.

I once got a guide from a local swimming pool installer which outlined what I'd need to do to build a block and liner pool but I've misplaced it. I thought that there'd be a similar guide for spas as well.
