Who here has done their own pool tile? Looking for the best installation method. Quotes I’m getting seem high and I wasn’t budgeting that much for tile. There are not very many videos I can find on it.

The number one thing is waterproofing the shell! That, above all else, is the most important. I will do some searching as I seem to remember a tile pool or two.

Make sure you apply good quality adhesive and epoxy grout. I used Latticret.

I don’t recommend tiling per this video. The installer is not achieving 95% coverage behind the tile and the grout joints will be completely unsupported. My pool tile was installed similar to this video and I have lots of grout problems and water behind my tile. This technique leaves lots of voids behind the tile and places for water to flow and ruin your pool. My pool needs to be refinished earlier than it otherwise would need because of this technique. The finished product looks great initially, but it won’t last.

I am going to be using a 1x1 glass mosaic tile so I will not be able to back butter the tile.

Here is the process I am going to follow:

Waterproof the shell where tile will be installed. Not sure this is actually necessary and still researching brand of waterproofing.
Build up a mortar bed to true the pool and create depth for the plaster.
Waterproof the mortar bed. (Still Researching Brand)
Use laticrete 254 platinum plus to adhere the tile.
Grout - Possibly epoxy.

Be very sure you use softened water for make up water and are very diligent on keeping your CSI negative. You will have evaporation water line scale and with glass, it will be very tricky on keeping it managed.
