Defoam in Spa?

I have a few years of managing a pool, but I'm new to the Spa world. I was talking with a friend, and they mentioned using something to defoam if the hot tub starts to produce foam. I know that foam is a bad thing. Normal clean moving water doesn't create foam, and I also know that TFP teaches to use the correct sanitizers and practice the proper water balance vs adding a bunch of unknowns into the water... That being said, what are the TFP thoughts on all of the spa products out there, like defoaming agents?

Foaming can result from having a CH that is very low. Adding some calcium can often stop it. Beyond that, I am not much help.

Certainly good to occasionally purge the tub with Ahhsome

Defoaming agents mask the real problem - dirty, nasty plumbing  Be sure to purge your plumbing (even on a brand new hot tub) using Ahh-some and then follow TFP procedures. Keep your CH at or near 200ppm and you won’t have problems with foaming. Also, keep people out of the hot tub that use body lotions or lots of hair products. If they want in, then they have to shower first. Try to keep the margarita and beer spillage to a minimum.

Thanks Matt - tub arrived on Friday and the company filled it, so everyone was eager to try it out. So I let that play out over the weekend, and I did my planned new tub Ahh-some purge on Monday evening based on what I'd read here.

Pretty nasty, especially considering it was manufactured less than 30 days ago. There's so much glue and adhesive from the assembly and shipping (manuals taped in, parts taped down, etc) that I'm not surprised how dirty they really are when they get to your door...
