DE filter air release valve not releasing water during prime

Hello TFP. It's been a tough year, but I hope you all are well.

Well, it's opening day here in New England.

I've got all my equipment set up, almost. Here's my issue.

When I turn on my pool pump water is pulled in and primed successfully. The returns in the pool are cranking during this process. I have DE cartridge filter. On the top of the filter I have my pressure gauge and air release valve. While priming (and as instructed) I leave the pressure release valve open until water spits out. My pressure gauge reaches normal operating levels from previous years, but water NEVER pours out of the valve. In prior years after a minute or two, water would spit out. In prior years I'd close it and then prime the filter with fresh DE. Could this be a clogged air release valve? Air is coming out and never stops. Is it an air suction leak? The pressure is adequate, so that's why I'm confused and leaning more towards a clogged air release valve. Continuous air is concerning though. When I close the valve even as air continues to leak, the air obviously stops and things "appear" to be as they should be (pressure is as expected and returns are cranking). Can I just ignore this and prime my filter for my opening or should I be more concerned? I'd prefer my equipment to be working as expected, but given the memorial day holiday coming up and with friends finally being able to visit (stupid Covid) I'd love to get things moving along. Any help would be great appreciated! Hopefully this is enough information, please let me know if I've missed anything. TFP has saved me more than once, that's for sure...
