Converting summer waves pool to sand filter

Hi all! My kids bought my wife a summer waves above ground pool last summer (3000 gallon/30 inch tall) and the little combo filter/pump unit needs to be replaced. It didn't work that good to begin with and this year the thing can't keep up at all. Anyway, I have been able to get my hands on an Intex Krystal Clear Sand Filter/pump (12 inch, 110/120 volt combo pump and sand filter) for next to nothing and I am trying to figure out how to connect it to our pool. On the internet there are tons of videos and posts about doing this type of job but I don't know what would be the correct way to convert our pool. The current Summer Waves unit, hanging on the side of the pool, has a round opening through the side wall of the pool liner. The ware comes through the round hole, through a cheap little plastic skimmer, through a size "D" filter cartridge, and then through a little hose back in to the pool. I never really wanted a pool because I wasn't sure my family would use it enough to justify the expense. However my family did enjoy the pool last year so I want to get ahead of the problem and get it converted over to a sand filter pump comb unit with a much greater circulation/filtering amount.

So, as I said above, I was able to get the Intex pump/sand filter combo (model SF80110-1, Product # 28645EG) which I want to use for our pool. Also, the guy I got it from also gave me an Intex Delux Wall Mount Skimmer with the pump. I don't know if that makes a difference but I thought I would list it here in case there is a way to incorporate it. I would also like to get a pool vacuum and the guy I got the pump filter says I can hook that up to this combo pump/filter unit, but he never hooked one up so he had no advice on how to do that.

In any event, I'm not a pool expert, or even that knowledgeable, so I am hoping someone can offer advice and help me get the new Intex pump/filter combo unit plumbed into our Poly-group Summer Waves pool. I am sure because they are different manufacturers that I will need some hoses and plumbing connector size converters, but I would like to know ahead of time what to get instead of wasting time and money through trial and error (buying/returning parts). I have lots of questions including: Can I use the existing (Summer Waves filter pump unit) with my new Intex pump/filter system or do I have to somehow convert the round hole in the pool side wall to a rectangle hole and use a different skimmer? Can I use the skimmer unit the guy gave me somehow? And once I get the conversion done, what do I need to get to hook up a pool vacuum to the Intex pump/sand filter and how do I do that.

I am hoping that there are some here who have done the same conversion, or a similar one, who can steer me to the correct process and parts to buy. If there are some links or video's that help, please let me know.

Thanks in advance to all who offer help and advice!

Forget the Intex Deluxe Skimmer -- the through the wall skimmer your pool came with will do a better job.

Thanks everybody. I probably should have included some pics to help people better understand what I have. I am an old guy and computers are not my friend so it is difficult for me to figure out how to post pictures so I will enclose links I hope will help.

The first link is a picture from this forum that shows a picture of the combo pump and filter that we currently have (7th post down from heftysmurf): Help! Adding Intex Sand Pump to Polygroup Summer Waves Pool

The second link is a picture of the Intex Krystal Clear Sand Filter Pump (model SF8011-1): 2100Gph Krystal Clearâ„¢ Sand Filter Pump, 110-120V with GFCI - Intex

Sorry for having to post web links butIi can't figure out how to post pictures. In any event, I hope this helps folks here see what I have now, and what I want to hook up. By the way, when I first starting researching this I found a video on the web where some guy had the same pool Summer Waves filter/pump combo and he hooked it up to an external pump & filter. If I remember correctly, he said he removed the pump motor from the filter/pump combo and attached the outgoing hose to the new external pump/filter. I can't find that video now and the guy didn't show or say how he did that, but perhaps someone here knows what to do.

As always, thanks to all who offer help and advice, it IS appreciated!
