I need to paint our Elk's Lodge concrete pool and can't believe how many different types of pool paint are out there! I am looking at a 5 gallon bucket of "oil based swimming pool paint" by Zinsser for $109 or 5g bucket of "low sheen waterborn acryllic stain" by Pool Deck for $128. Are either of these acceptable or am I going to have get a more expensive one?

Also we got some areas that could use a little patching. How? With what?

Painting a pool is no longer a viable alternative. The paint is not up to the standards of the past.

Others may have some information. @JamesW

The amount of prep work you would have to do in order to paint that pool and make it last 2 to 3 seasons doesn't make it worth it when you figure labor and materials. The only options are to replaster the pool or maybe you could turn it into a liner pool

Nether :( The paint formulas have changed in the past few years. It becomes chalky which causes cloudy water as well as coming off on any body parts that rub up against in.

100% agree with Kim. We painted our pool in the spring of 2013 and within 3 years it was chalking really bad. If there were a lot of people in the pool it would mix up really well and end up looking like milk. I’m currently in the home stretch of a very long reno (winter got in the way!) where we sandblasted the old paint out and are plastering the pool.

Hi Vince! I used the Zinsser pool paint about 7 years ago and I'd like to redo it this fall. Unfortunately, it's no longer available in California, but it is in other states. Might tell you something about its formula likely having stayed the same. Prep work is important, but not overwhelming. Are your members good workers? If so, I'd say go for it, using the right PPE! Replastering is certainly the preferred option, but budgetary concerns are obviously a real factor.
