Clarifier instead of shock mistake

I opened my pool and picked up 16 bottles of what I thought was shock only to find out after I put two gallons in my pool it is clarifier. My pool (~40,000 gallons inground) usually starts pretty green and takes me about a week to get it swimming ready. The bottles looked exactly like the shock ones but says clarifier. I only noticed this when I went to check the % as it looked clear instead of yellow.

I usually need a lot of shock for the first few days and not sure what my best course of action is right now. I've never used clarifier and not even sure what it does.

It was in the pile of shock bottles so I didn't even notice I picked it up.

DE, which I noticed on the bottle it says don't use with de filters.
:brickwall: I wish I had a dollar for every one of those moments. Well, we know from experience those floc/clarifier products tend to gum-up filters, and I can understand why DE would be even more critical because of the fine filtering of the grids/fingers.

I don't know if there's an easy way around this one. I'll ask @JoyfulNoise who speaks DE quite well. :)

Is liquid shock a floc? I just watched a video explaining difference between clarifier and floc, but I've never heard shock called Floc. I do plan on replacing my DE fins this year after I get the pool open and clean, we have had problems with low pressure, and think the fins might need to be replaced anyway but was going to wait until we get the algae out to do it. It's pretty bad when we open, but gets crystal clear in a week (when I actually use shock lol). I do plan on running my dolpin to do a lot of vaccuuming once I get it started (which may help clear up this clarifier mess?)

I'd wait on that as well until Matt has a chance to reply. He's owned a Dolphin as well. I'm concerned about the effects of a clarifier on the filters of that as well. Maybe not as critical as the DE filter, but let's see what he has to say. He'll check in at some point later. Lots of people doing the "Mother's" thing today. :)

If you turn the filter off, the floc will settle. Then you need to find a way to vacuum it off the bottom.

My first thought is to take the grids out and put a t-shirt inside the skimmer basket to try to catch all of the stuff.

Then we can work cleaning your grids.
I put a skimmer sock on the skimmer I don't usually use them as they fall off but I put it on until I get this situatated.
Pictures of the labels on the bottles?

Pictures of the pool?

What is the filter pressure doing?
I loaded the boxes up to return what I haven’t used. It said some type of polymer as ingredient but no percentages or anything.

The pool is in rough shape but it always starts bad then after a few days of vacuuming and lots of shock it is crystal clear all year. This year is really bad as I gave up on anti algae at end of year as it doesn’t seem to stop it from opening deep green. Normally it is bad but not this bad. But it is just algae as I close and cover it crystal clear.

I’m not home so I won’t know the pressure until I get back. I also haven’t done any readings. I just wanted to get the water circulating and a couple bottles of shock in to get things started until I realized this is clarifier and not shock. The bottles look exactly the same until you look for percentages and name. They are extremely similar. It is Austin brand sold at ocean job lots. I saw the big stack of boxes, it said shock and I grabbed four boxes only to notice they are clarifier once I dumped two in the pool and started wondering why they are so clear and not yellow and salty.

I just got back. I swapped out the unused clarifier for real shock. When can I start using shock? I know you are not suppose to use them at the same time and I only put two bottles in which probably isn’t a huge amount for a 40k pool. I want to put 2-3 bottles of liquid shock in when I get home so I can start the recovery but I am not sure if I can do that right away now.

Without knowing exactly what was added, we can't give you the best advice.

In any case, I would do a normal SLAM and clean the filter as many times as necessary.

This.

It looks very much like and boxed like their shock I buy every year. It was stacked right with their shock so I thought I was picking up 4 cases of shock.
I put two gallons in before I realized it wasn't shock.
