Cement pool deck repair

Hi there, I'm looking for some advice on how to deal with my cement pool deck. It's about 50 years old and appears to have been painted many times and may have had some additional cement added at some point to the original surface. Some areas are in ok shape, others are chipped and pieces are coming off. What I'd like to do is remove the old paint and all loose material and then apply some kind of skim coat or filling material to smooth out all the divots and whatnot and then maybe paint it. I'm open to other alternatives aside from complete replacement if there are any such. What I"m concerned about though is how successful I'll be on the prep - that's a lot of paint and and a lot of layers of stuff and then would any new filling material or paint stick. I am not prepared at this stage to rip out the whole thing. Any advice on solution, approach and tools greatly appreciated! Take care and stay safe!
