caulk replacement sand?

Welcome to TFP.

You talking about the pool expansion joint? You put in a foam backing to hold up a flexible mastic like Deck-O-Seal.

Thanks. What about all the empty space below? Put sand there and then the foam on the sand?

I think you can leave a void under the foam. How deep of a space do you have and how wide is the expansion joint?

Thanks for your reply. The depth is about 6 inches and the joint is 1 1/2 inches at its widest point.

That is wide and deep. You need to find 1.5” foam backing rod. It will take a lot of caulk. Can you close up the gap? What type of deck?

Thanks. I hve about 100 lineal feet so I don't plan on doing it myself. One person I spoke with said he would put sand in first to fill in part of the gap and then foam. I have been reading that sand is not good because it doesn't allow for expansion but maybe for this purpose it's ok. My back and knees hurt just thinking about it :). I am in Southern California, so I don't have to worry about freezing weather.

DO put sand in there. Only lazy or incompetent pool people do that. And there reason for doing is cause they dont wont to take the time to seal the little voids not sealed that the Deck O seal will run down into and take for ever to fill.
One PB I talked to in So. Ca. mortars the joint completely.
