Can water circulate too fast?

I had a big ladder in my 24' above ground pool last year, and it seemed to slow down the water circulation speed enough so that floating debris made it's way to my intake and basket.

Now this year I removed that ladder (too big and bulky, plus it held on to a lot of agae), so water circulation is no longer impeded, which is causing most of the floating debris to just blow by my intake and just continue circulating.

Maybe I just need to aim my single output flow to go more towards the bottom of the pool?

Any thoughts?

I feel ya on the debris just blasting by the skimmer. With out the stairs in the pool everything just flys on by the skimmer opening. Once the stairs go in it slows down the momentum and all is good.

If you think about it in a round pool it's just going to keep going around and around, faster and faster until there's an obstruction. Just have to adjust the return more outward toward the center to counter the natural circulation pattern of a round pool.

I have a mini lazy river circulation ripping around my pool and it is helpful in our case. I just bungee a leaf net to the ladder in front of the skimmer and it keeps most large debris out of the skimmer. It's kind of a ratty solution and we take it off when we have guests, but it works, as we have a couple nearby locust trees that cast off leaves/pollen multiple times per year.

Plan for later this season is to take the old pool pole and fashion a removable arm to hold the leaf net. Basically fast circulation helps us deal with all the leaves, as most don't have time to sink and get caught in the net. Those that do sink are tidied up into the center of the pool by the current for easy cleaning.
