Hi there.

Question - is the ice melt product good enough for the pool? This 10lb is a lot cheaper than 4lb Calcium Hardness at Walmart

CAS# Sodium Chloride 007647-14-5
CAS# Calcium Chloride 010043-52-4
CAS# Magnesium Chloride 007791-18-6-52-4

If this one is not perfect, which HD\Lowe's brand should I get?
Thanks!

Calcium Chloride is the one product that I buy, and recommend to our members, to buy the pool store or pool CH increaser, even on Amazon. Too much junk can come with the ice melt, I don't feel it is worth the risks. Especially for a couple buck with a very expensive pool.

Calcium Chloride anhydrous gives 317.2 Btu/lb. when dissolved in water.

Solubility in water = 74.5 g/100ml at 20°C.

Adding 1 lb anhydrous CaCl2 to less than 0.3 gallons of water will result in the water boiling (Water temp = 84 degrees before adding CaCl2.)

Y = Temperature Rise.

X = Gallons of water.

For 1 lb CaCl2.

Gallons.....Temperature rise (F).

0.12...............317.2

0.161...............236.4 (Maximum Solubility is 1 lb in 1.34 lbs of water).

0.24...............158.6.

0.30...............128 (128 + 84 = 212).

0.48.................79.3

1.0...................38

1.5...................25

2.0...................19

2.5...................15.2

3.0...................12.67

My issue with deicers is that they will change the formula with zero concerns about pools. Maybe you did your homework well enough this time, maybe not, maybe the new bag isnt fully detailed online yet and you're looking at the old MSDS.

I use Puritech brand from Amazon and it's usually $2 /lb. It's a happy medium between the expensive stuff and the who knows whats in it stuff.
