Hi everyone,
I write a novel every problem I have for anything but I really need help on this one so please bare with me!!

So I have had a pool for 12 years, and like every new pool owner I've had my struggles but with all the hopefully non self-inflicting issues I've learned a lot.

Reason I come here is my mother in laws pool. We live in Massachusetts and she is opening it. It is a 19k gallon pool with a vinyl liner and she converted to salt a year or so and I don't know much about that. She went to a local well known pool place with a pool sample and got test results back(attached). Then she was directed to technical support desk for what to put in and of course bought what they said. She then went home, poured 25 POUNDS!! of Super Shockwave in which I believe is the same as Burnout 73. Then added probably 1/3 of an algeacide bottle shortly there after.

Instructions from printout of pool place say pretty good Instructions about hooking up filter, putting plugs back on pump etc then says to not run filter, but doesn't say anything about putting pump on which I would say is confusing for a beginner. Both packages of shock and from what I've read and found the recommended doses call for about 1 pound per 16500 gallons. Obviously she needs more because it's opening but 25 pounds!!!!

I went there the night she threw in $280 worth of shock thankfully IMO because she broadcast it all over pool without pump on. I put pump on, set it to recirculate, and brushed her whole pool. Her water is still cloudy

Oh my! All that calcium is making it cloudy. For the record- vinyl pools don't require ANY calcium although some heaters do need some.

You probably need to do some water exchanging. All the chlorine may bleach the liner, and all that calcium can cause a scale like feeling on the vinyl.

I would also go back to that pool store and make a complaint, and perhaps get them to refund that bad advice.

Since that I have gone over 3 more times, brushed it a couple times because I feel like her liner is going to be brittle now. I have also backwashed everything I have been there. My startup on my 13k gallon pool with vinyl liner is I connect everything, run recirculate then immediately add 2 to 3 bags of shock. By next morning I can see bottom and then vacuum all of the algae with wasteout in at least the bottom. After that I scrub sides and bottom then add hopefully not too much water and re shock it with 1 or 2 bags to kill remaining algae. Total maybe 5 lbs at most over 2 days. Day or maybe hours after I can see bottom again. Her pool I cannot still see the bottom 3 days later. Obviously because I scrubbed bottom and sides with just opened pool because she three in 25 pounds will definitely take longer to see stuff.

Pool store testing is notoriously bad and inconsistent.
You really need one of the recommended test kits to do this correctly.
Test Kits Compared

We do thinks differently than pool stores and we also have the documented science to back it up.
Read thru Pool Care Basics

We are here to help you get the pool back in shape. But you need one of the recommended test kits to start.
The TF-Pro from TFTestkits is the best value for the money and includes the SpeedStir stirring device.
The Taylor K2006C is also a good test kit, but the stirring device is an extra cost with this kit.

BTW - 25 pounds of CalHypo (what "Super Shockwave" contains) would raise the FC level in a 19k pool by about 100ppm - and could bleach the liner.
It also will raise the calcium level by about 80ppm and salt by about 110ppm.
CalHypo contains calcium.

You wrote all that calcium so does shock create calcium
Nope. To get chlorine in non-liquid or gas form, it has have other products included primarily:
- Cal-hypo (what she used) is chlorine + calcium
- Trichlor is chlorine + CYA

That is why we recommend liquid chlorine, unless your testing shows you have a need to increase either the calcium or CYA of your pool

And don't put tablets in the skimmer. Tablets are acidic and can cause equipment damage.
If you must use tablets, get a floaty and put them in that.

No need to raise chlorine levels above SLAM Process recommendations.
See - FC/CYA Levels
You need an accurate CYA reading (not the one from the pool store) to see what minimum, target and SLAM Process chlorine levels are.

So I just called place and told the person on the phone that another place told me 25 lbs of shock to add then asked person if it made sense and they said yes. So why the heck did I hear one tech when I was in line say 4 pounds to another customer. Do they have a 3000 gallon pool or a hot tub 10 times the average? Can someone tell me what I am missing? Do they supply the world's worst shock?

Thanks JJ. So if I were to take a poll and ask is 25 lbs more than 4 times amount that should have been added should I get 100 yes and 0 no?
Well if you polled me, I would say yes. The 25lbs added FC of 123. The maximum recommended FC level is 20 for a pool with CYA of 50, so that is 6 times the amount and can cause damage to equipment, liners, etc.

If you include pool store employees in the poll, no telling what the results would be. I've never seen a group of "professionals" have so much bad information or just make stuff up for a sale. Yesterday someone reported that the pool store told them their chlorine level will give their daughters UTIs

If you are saying you have a TF100, that will get you all of the readings needed except for salt. That kit can be purchased separately here:

Simple. Pool stores are idiots. You will drive yourself crazy trying to find logic there.
