Broken pressure gauge?

We are first-time pool owners and have a Jandy CV 460 filter cartridge.

We just had our pool serviced yesterday, and the technician informed us that the filter pressure gauge was broken and had been taped back on. The cartridge wasn’t generating any pressure on the gauge. He mentioned that the gauge wasn’t facing the correct direction and appeared to have been taped back on by the previous owner. When he attempted to twist it into the correct position, the gauge broke off from the handle.

We’re a bit confused, as we had the pool inspected prior to closing and assumed a broken pressure gauge would have been an obvious issue. We’re unsure how to proceed from here.

Additionally, we were told that we just need to turn on the backwash valve at the bottom of the cartridge to drain excess pool water. Is it really that simple? When I tried to research it online, it seemed like there were more steps involved.

Welcome to TFP.
Suggest you purchase a new filter pressure gauge. The challenge will be remove the existing broken thread. You will need to take the top off of the filter and try to work that broken piece out.

Note - you can only tighten the gauge so much. Do not over tighten. Once it is tight, then rotate the whole top of the filter so the gauge faces the right way to see it.

You only need the broken part.

The piece is easy to remove.

Tap in a hot flat blade screwdriver and unscrew.

We were quote 110$ for whole assembly from Leslie and no charge for labor. I think it’s reasonable?
Your assessment of reasonable is just that..."Yours." We see a wide range of "DIY" abilities on TFP.

For an $11 part, I'm heating a screw driver and putting it into the old, broken off fitting and unscrewing. Then replacing with an $11 part.
You may not have the capability/skill to do that, and $110 for the labor and parts may be reasonable.

Down the road when I’m more familiar/comfortable, I hope that’s something I can DIY myself. 🤞

To turn a gauge on that filter to face the direction you want, the entire tank top must be turned, try to just turn the gauge assembly and you have a broken one. Its the only way. Someone broke that assembly trying the wrong way.
Cartridges do not generate any pressure, they are just dirt-collection "bags." Pumps generate pressure and if you have good water flow and low pressure, that is what you want.
The valve at the bottom of your tank is just a drain valve.
When asking for help, it is best that we all speak the same "language."

You can just loosen the union nut and turn the gauge in any direction.

Yes, you can, but if the gauge has been in one location for a while, it will leak at that point if changed/disturbed. Been there. Then you fight a leak and, unhappy customer, until either you win or replace that expensive piece of plastic. Easier to just turn the tank top and not touch it. Or, put the tank top on the correct way to start, just takes a bit of thinking about what you are doing. Touching old plastic in the pool business is "scary."
