Hello TFP!
I am looking for some advice. I was wondering if anyone has placed a few trichlor tab floaters in their pool while the winter cover is still on. I am going on vacation for a few weeks and thought that I would just wait to open the pool when I return. The weather will get warm and I am thinking that putting floaters in while gone will keep the chlorine levels up and keep it from turning green. The water level is about 5 -6 inches below the skimmer opening, so the pump will not be running at all. Will doing this pose any problem with the pool walls or vinyl liner? When filled, it is about a 14,000-gallon above-ground round pool. Also, if this is okay to do this, how many 3" tabs should I put in? Thank you for any help!

If there is no circulation of the water then this is a bad idea. The chlorine will not get distributed around the pool and instead form a bubble of highly chlorinated and acidic water that will be bad for the cover, liner, and anything else it touches.

Thanks for your reply. I won't be doing that. :) However, I am just wondering what would be less troublesome, opening and hoping for the best while gone, or not opening until I return in late June?

Water is stoopid cheap in Michagan, right ? I'd dump 3/4 of it when I got back to leave 12 to 18 inches to hold the liner in place. Then I'd slow or cycle the pumping out on and off to match the fill speed to get most of the remaining water out. Once refilled it would be an easy slam for the little bit of old water left.

Or open it properly and put the cover back on when you go. Bring it to slam and have a friend stop by twice during your trip to bring it back to slam. This is 2025 and you can facetime (etc) to walk them through FC testing. 'OK now fill the vial to 10 ml'. 'Add a scoop of powder'............ It's simple stuff if someone is telling them how in real time.
