Water Guru vs the pool strips, which should I trust?

Hey all, i tried searching through the treads to see if there was a similar conversation but came up empty

New saltwater pool dug in the spring and the included weekly pool service contract has come to a close, so now I am trying to maintain the water balance myself. I am getting wildly different measurements and not sure which one I should trust.

I got a water guru and the pooli app strips to get myself started.
The water guru, sitting in the skimmer gave me a FC of 3.5 and a pH of 7.8. I got the pooli strips to analyze the rest of the chemicals, but noticed the pH and chlorine are off.
Testing at the same time with the pooli strips gave me a a FC of 1.87 and a pH of 7.16. I re tested from just in front of the skimmer and got a FC of 2 and a pH of 7.01

Which one of these should I be trusting? Drop both and get something else? I'm colorblind, and see the threads about my shades of grey friends, so will start digging through them, but I have an awful time seeing any difference in shades.

Thanks for any and all help!

Dan

Hi Dan and welcome to TFP! Stick around here for a while and you'll hear it repeated many times test strips are simply worth the paper they are printed on. Very unreliable. As for some of today's gadgets, we don't hold a lot of value with those either. Here at TFP, it's all about accurate homeowner water testing with a TF-100 (link in my signature) or Taylor K-2006C test kit. Before you go too far, I would highly recommend obtaining one of those to validate your water testing.

See our Pool Care Basics page and the link below for more assistance.

That one is tough if colorblind.
Dan, my apologies, I flew right past that obvious detail. :hammer: You have read that in many cases it's the color shade transitions that are important with drop testing, but on an occasion or two a digital meter may very compliment your arsenal of testing. I can't speak for the accuracy of the Guru, but tftestkits.net does offer a digital pH tester as well.

For reference here are some videos showing the definitive changes for each test - as mentioned above the only necessary one that relies on interpretation of shades is the ph test which can be complimented by the use of a meter & the oto total chlorine test which is really not necessary or that accurate -the fas dpd test is the one u want to use regularly.
