My drain covers are starting to crack and break after 20 years. I am trying to remove them, but they won’t budge. I chipped away the grout from around the edge, but it will not move. This is one that has a collar. I am attaching a picture. I have two small dogs and a grandson and I’m concerned they will get hurt.

I am seeing a Dremel tool with a cutting wheel followed by some CAREFUL chisel to get that up and out.

I used a Dremel to remove the heavy grout on top of the drain. I then used a large flat-head screwdriver and hammer to chisel all around it. Because it is open, I tried to loosen the bottom of the collar. No luck. Currently, I have it covered with a door mat.

Pretty sure Kim was reffering to cutting the cap itself. So if you look down at the top, it looks like a C instead of O. Then you can probably wedge the rest out with the flat screwdriver.

Also, it should be standard and easy to find a replacement. HD/lowes/hardware store / plumbing supply should all have them.
And Dude reads my mind again LOL That is just what I meant and was seeing in my head.
This must be the day for it. I just posted the same question on the DIY forum. No replies yet.
Did you get your drain gates removed? I am trying to cut the cap, but it has a collar on it. My Dremel doesn’t have a right angle attachment so I cannot get very far. Just hoping they didn’t glue those in.

Have you tried WD-40 or CLR to loosen it. Looks like the metal has fussed together. Well when you get it out and reinstall the new one. Put some "anti-cease" on the drain. Then remove them every year and reapply so you can get the out more easily.

Metal? Pretty sure the drain covers are plastic. Between the sun and dirt getting to them for 20 years, they are brittle and there is grit between the sides of the drain pipe and drain cover. Anti-cease won't help.
A air compressor with an air gun could work that grit out pretty good.
THANKS to all who helped this grandma solve this problem. I did what KitKats suggested and attacked 2 drain covers with a big chisel. They came off in less than a minute. And proavia- they were full of all kinds of grime and muck. I appreciate all contributed. 
Got to love a Grandma that is not afraid of using a big hammer!!!

My "Old Plumber" is a big fan of Vaseline, Put a liberal amount on the new cover and you should be able to remove it more easily next time.
