Gunite spa plaster won’t clean up

What is your CH? This is just a guess but it looks like calcium scale with imbedded dirt. Solution would be to lower water level to expose it and clean with a wire brush or muriatic

Thoughts On CYA Level VS FC

Well, it seems it would shorten the life a little but I don't know what alternatives are available. The covers are short-lived anyway so I doubt you will see much difference.

Question on opening pool and pump/filter priming

    Pump loses prime?

Your description is hard to follow so I'll just make this general statement...... Loss of prime more often than not is the result of a suction side leak This may help Suction Side Air Leaks

    Dosage Question

Welcome to the forum  I would be just a bit more concerned. CH seems to build up more quickly than folks think and it's a pain to get rid of. 250 CH is enough and keeps you in the 250-400 range as recommended.

    Multiple SLAM attempts

Poolstored, I understand. I wanted readers to understand that sometimes clarifiers work, (rarely ?) however, it is not included in TFP's suggested methods and I think you left little doubt about that.

    Target ph or CYA first

The SLAM article is VERY specific about the factors required to be finished. Follow the SLAM article to the letter......you are NOT done,

    Multiple SLAM attempts

TFP does not suggest clarifier. If often causes more complications but, in some cases (apparently yours included) it seems to work. Check your filter media when your SLAM is done making sure you are not gummed up. So progress from greenish to bluish is very good. Sounds like algae after all...

Review of my plan? New to maintaining my own pool...black algae and CYA way off

Are you really sure it's black algae? Got a pic?

    Algae or somethimg

Well, no. We use a process called SLAM to get rid of algae permanently. We never "shock" a pool. Here's more info https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/2018/12/12/slam-shock-level-and-maintain/ https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/category/pool-school/pool-care-basics/

    Algae and Normal TA?

First of all, high TA is completely unrelated to any algae..........repeating Texas Splash' advice that you stay out of the pool store. So, the first step we will ask you is to read Pool Care Basics Archives That get's you started on some basics. Then, you will see that we get rid...

    Algae or somethimg

Pump on, you get more flow across the seams, depositing more dead algae
  18. duraleigh

    Algae or somethimg

Probably the dead algae is suspended in your pool water and sinks slowly and accumulates in the seams. However, that probably also means you have live algae that causes what you are seeing. A SLAM process is perhaps called for but a complete set of test results is needed to be...

    Multiple SLAM attempts

To me, green color has either meant algae (which I don't think you have) or iron?????? Do you fill from a well? Have you tested for iron?

    SLAM Guidance...

I am seeing some "cloudy" information in this thread 1. What are we checking at 10 minute intervals and why? I don't get that 2. Establish the CYA at around 30 and don't test it again until OCLT is passed......there is no need 3. Backwash only when psi increases 25% from clean......more...

    FC not testing

Hold off on CYA until you pass an OCLT Just skimming this thread, you seem determined NOT to follow the SLAM process. Sorry to be harsh but meticulous detail to the process is required for it to work

    Calcium Hardness Sudden Change

Agreeing with mgtfp, it is logical to assume the two most recent reagent are correct. Also, we know that calcium does not appear magically in a pool unless someone puts it there (maybe with fill water) so that sorta confirms the last two tests. I can think of no reasonable answer to your CH...

    Puffballs on bottom of pool

Wow! I don't think we have EVER seen that on the forum before. It HAS to be organic so you would think chlorine would solve it permanently. Probably a type of mold rather than algae but chlorine would still be the answer. Can you manually vac them up? How big is the affected area?
  25. duraleigh

    Black algae stains.

How long have you noticed this? Can you scrape some off the pool surface and get a dark greenish color by smearing it onto a piece of white paper?

    Chlorine loss during slam

Double filtering does not seem like a particularly effective addition to me. Why are you thinking that will be helpful?
  27. duraleigh

    Chlorine loss during slam

I didn't post very clearly above. I think the only things that could be worrisome is the sand is in solidified clumps or organic debris pile on top of the sand bed. I doubt you will find either, but a visual inspection will confirm that. There will likely be a small amount of debris but...
  28. duraleigh

    Chlorine loss during slam

I suppose it could be clumped up badly but I doubt it. I believe you may have some debris on the top of the sand bed but that shouldn't be an issue. So you are really only checking the level of sand to make sure you have enough.

2 weeks of SLAM and still green

I am above my pay grade on this but I think it may be worthwhile to open up and inspect the multiport valve. There is a "wagon wheel" gasket inside that may not be seating properly and allowing the sand to leak around it. I would suggest you wait until someone else confirms that can be a...
