Why should I transition to salt?

Well, let's not over sell - I installed mine last year. The plumbing part was very easy for me. But depending on your equipment, it might be as easy as cutting out a section of pipe to add the cell...or it might be a few to many fittings and pieces of pipe to reroute things so it will fit...

Why should I transition to salt?

More learned members can detail the cost comparisons (there have actual been some recent very detailed threads about that), but it does end up with SWCG's being less expensive in the long run. Consider there is the trip to the store, the selecting and paying, the appropriate vehicle for...

    Salt Water Generator Question

CircuPool sells a dummy pvc pipe with the quick disconnect fittings, so it just replaces their generator. Kinda pricey. Being new to that world, I got it to use as part of winterizing. Kept it in place all winter, and took the generator indoors. Mostly unsure whether it was unkind to it by...

If algae and silt is vac'd to filter, will it end up back in the pool?

It might be worth it to test current Cl levels. Then with a new sample dilute 50/50 with distilled water, add the DPD and run the test again to see if you measure 1/2 the previous. It may not be all that precise, but might get you good enough to know when you are above SLAM target, or have...

If algae and silt is vac'd to filter, will it end up back in the pool?

In my bad old non-TFP days I had an undersized sand filter. After l dumped in a lot of Cl to "shock" it, I was left with lots of dead algae. While I tried to vac to waste, that resulted in the pool being too low long before I was done vacuuming. So I would also vac to filter. The prime...

    pH test help

I think it has more to do with the removal of CO2 (ie Carbonic Acid), which thereby increases pH, rather than messing with the water molecules... There are some old posts by a member known as Chem Geek that go really deep into the chemistry. Pools tend to be a bit carbonated, so any aeration...

    pH test help

Definitely test your tap water. I remember Rochester having water back in the day (long time ago) that needed a LOT of treatment. So it may be naturally added to the pool. If the test comes back with low or very low TA, at least you can eliminate that as one source of the problem.

    What is this chemical?

FWIW - Menard's seems to always have good pricing and stock on pool salt (might need next spring after rain/snow refill the pool) - I needed 4 bags this year. Menards is convenient for liquid chlorine - but check date codes. Might need for early spring cold water use, or very late fall when...

    New PoolMath coming

You may be on to something...my new Pool Math gives the same (4.8 oz) when I plug in your numbers. If instead I go to the "Old PoolMath Webpage" link at the bottom of this site, it says to add 28 oz of acid. I thought the amount of acid recommended for my pool seemed pretty light......

    What is this chemical?

This is available at the 55th St. Walmart. You'll need about 2.5-3 bags if at 0 CYA. $62 total. In future years, perhaps a bag, once, to replace what was lost when you have to lower your pool for the winter. Walmart Stabilizer But if you order from the Amazon link above, then it will only be $45

    What is this chemical?

You've got it! At worst, if things get way out of whack in the future, you may need a bag of baking soda or a few gallons of liquid chlorine. But only buy if you really need them, no sense having them around just in case. Wife and I grew up in Roch - Go Rockets! (Or for her - Go Spartans!)

    What is this chemical?

As noted, the bag is Boric Acid - see the Pool School for information about adding Borax, and the pros and cons. I entertained it, but so far my Minn. pool has not had any issues where using it would be a definitive plus. So why spend the money? Plus there is a suspicion that my dogs...

Question about CH levels and cleaning filter/SWG

Can't speak for all - but mine is inside a clear tube, so easy to look at. Most are pretty easy to take off the plumbing to peer directly into it to get a better view. I take mine off completely for over wintering. But in climates where one doesn't worry about freezing, they only need to be...

    Heavy Rain Lowered Hardness

Read more here, it is more complicated than just the Calcium level: Calcium Saturation Index (CSI) You didn't supply all the information needed, but guessing at temperature, etc., it looks like your CSI is very, very good. Testing results are oddly precise for some items, so may not be...

Question about CH levels and cleaning filter/SWG

My filter and SWCG have only one season on them - the filter manual says to clean when pressure climbs 10 lbs above original clean. There's even a handy adjustable indicator on the pressure relief valve to remind me. After an entire season (April-Oct), and LOTS of things to filter, pressure...

Pool seems to just drink up bleach so fast

I just converted with the RJ-60 last summer. Physical install for me was very easy - just took some pipe and fittings to route things appropriately. Very quick job. You can run the pump on very low speed 24/7 making Cl all the while, and potentially saving a lot of electricity cost. BUT -...

Brand new pool owner, confused by readings

One other biggie - what is your water temperature? Here in the Mpls/St/Paul area I just barely hit 60 for a day, and now it's dropped a few degrees with the prolonged rain/cold front. I don't trust many of my readings when the water is cold. Take your water sample, and bring it inside and...

    New PoolMath coming

As of this note, the newest version noted above is not yet out on the App Store for updating on an iPhone. Version 360, released a year ago, is the most recent currently available. To find your version, go to the 3 lines in the upper left of any Pool Math screen, then click on "About TFP"...

    Purchasing calcium chloride

Interesting that I always have pretty low Calcium. I stopped by our local water plant (it is only 1/2 mile from me). Apparently we are unique in this area. CA ranges up to 300 ppm here. But due to protection for our nearby lake (it is a "catchment lake (no inlet stream))", the city long ago...

    Purchasing calcium chloride

My 2 bags arrive tomorrow! Sure hope it is the real thing. Been burned when places sub in something "just like it". BTW - the local Lowes said they had 94% in stock, in either 50 lb bags, or 10 lb jugs. Of course, none found in the location it was supposed to be at in the store. Even the...

Newb question - What chemicals to buy?

The daily tests are a rough check on the Cl values. They are fast, and cheap, to do. The weekly is more precise, and allows one to also test Combined Cl. Me? I almost never do the quick Cl tests, and do the other much more often. It does take a bit longer, and uses up more chemicals, though....

Two dead injured beheaded possums in pool

Beyond scooping/filtering out the parts - that is what Chlorine is for. Killing things that may have found body fluids tasty - bacteria, viruses, etc. Any fan of CSI or Criminal Minds knows that bleach is the preferred way to clean up blood after a murder. If squeamish, you can do a mini-SLAM...

    5 day vacation

You can buy a floater for the tabs at a nearby store (pool store, sometimes walmart, etc), if your Cl is starting out in a good range, then one or two tabs should be good enough. I used to go through 2-5 per week for a 23,000 gal pool - depends a LOT on water temperature. You can then remove...

With the cost of SWG cells having doubled, is SWG still the way to go?

I live in a climate very similat to Pool_Medic. I used to go through slightly more than 50 lbs of 3" tabs in a season. Plus liquid CL for the times it all got away from me due to not noticing the off line chlorinator had gone dry. Plus the constant need for chlorinator check valves as even the...

Leak in vinyl liner - what steps should we take?

Exactly - why risk damage by possibly draining it too far down? At 10 yrs, the liner is likely starting to pinhole, and there may be a couple of leaks - not just one. The electronic testing can find that out also.

Leak in vinyl liner - what steps should we take?

Capping everything again may tell you whether the leak is confined to the pool itself (liner, skimmers, lights, drain, returns). If it stops, but then happens after opening things again, then the likelihood is the underground plumbing or the equipment. Waiting for the water to drop to the level...

    Chlorinator issue

What is you water temp? Pucks do dissolve a lot slower in cold water. And many of our test aren't very accurate in cold water. What is clarity and dirt/wall growth like? A load of algae/bacteria/organics ,like one may get on opening, can suck up a lot of CL really fast

What to do with Old Liquid Chlorine

Interesting tabulation, but in my case ( and likely the OP), the average temp ranged from 40 to -10 F in the 6 month period. Extrapolating from the chart seems to indicate almost no degradation...but that probably isn't right. The dump and measure against the predicted seems to be what would...

    Filling pool after new liner

Looks like it is going to stay chilly here for the next week (high 50, low 30), so anything growing will be very slow. Get your FC up, just in case - but you likely won't have to augment much, unless the coming rain is more than predicted. I just uncovered mine today. Didn't take it's temp...
