I’ve always wanted to build a deck like this around my pool, but I have 2 questions.

1) How do you get the winter cover on? The boards butt right up against the side of the pool.

2) How do you access the pump & filter?

1. You use water bags, or weights, or straps, the cover spreads out onto the deck rather than around the sides of the pool. People do find this frustrating if they use water bags or weights.

2. You locate the pump and filter away from the pool and not under the deck, or you do put it under the deck and it sucks to do maintenance.

Hey scopes !!

The tarp method is heavily favored for economic reasons. Also favored for the economics of it all are the water bags, which inevitably pop and need replacing $25 at a time. Or you can spend once on aqua boxes (IIRC) that are and plastic and fill with water. They cost more but last forever. Both of these methods are a bit of an eyesore and provide no safety. They are only meant for stopping debris from entering the pool.

Having the fresh deck opens the possibility of using a true safety cover. (Loop loc, etc) and securing the straps to the decking itself to provide both safety and debris management. This doesn’t always work on older decks depending on their condition.

In the end it probably costs the same if you want to replace the tarp every other year and the bags/blocks as needed, or just spend once on the safety cover and be good for 10 years+.

Thank you both!

I really want to do this, just trying to figure out if the hassle of maintenance underneath a deck where the pump will be is worth it.
