Really just curious. I understand that the pH of the typical eye is around 7.5, but is that the primary reason? Or is there a more complex reasoning? Or is it easier to maintain TA 50-90 {edited} and pH 7.5?
Who says the TA is supposed to be 120? That is way too high and will just pull the pH up. Only reason to have it that high is if you are using acidic tablets which we don't recommend.
There really is not a set standard at 7.5. Chemistry dictates that the pH must be in the 7s to not damage the pool by either dissolving plaster or causing calcium scaling. But in addition is the human comfort factor.
I totally stand corrected. I had my current TA levels on my mind. My municipal supply comes out the tap at 180 and I had been working it down. Mine usually settles in around 70. Sorry about that.
In my case, 7.5 is certainly easier. My TA is 90 right now. I've never done anything to specifically move it. My pH drifts up every few days. I'd have to battle to keep it at 7.
