I have a 21 foot above ground pool and last year my pump went out. I am looking to get a new pump but looking to get a pump that is energy efficient but also not $1,500. unless I know for a fact the energy savings will cover the additional cost over a $300 single speed pump. Thoughts on what direction to go? I have called the local pool shops and they are worthless.

Do you have 120 or 240 volt power. If 120, there are good options, but they are a little more limited.

How often do you run your pump & what is your kwh rate?
If you know those You can get an idea of the savings using this calculator
There are also some less expensive 2 speed options available for 120v like the pureline 1.5 hp dual speed for under $200 currently.

My last one got run about 10 hours. According to the calculation I would save $161. Is that a year?

Yes - their results may be a tad off as they don’t mention what average rpm w/ vsp.
the 2 speed I mentioned runs at 3450 rpm on high (1.5hp)
& 1720 rpm on low (.39 hp)
With a variable speed pump most people run mostly around that lower rpm (1200-1700rpm) anyway so with a 2 speed you get the benefit of lower consumption without the expense of vsp
