What are salt cells? Is it just the metal plates inside that I need to replace?

Hey, when you replace a salt cell (I have a Jandy Aquapure Ei), is the main piece that makes the SWG turn salt to chlorine just the thin metal plates??

For example, lets say I need a new cell...what if I was to just take out the metal plates in the old unit and replace it with new metal pieces? Would the old cell work like new again?

Picture of my cell for reference..

The plates are made of titanium and coated on both sides with a ruthenium oxide/iridium mixture. About 80/20 Ru/Ir. Now go look at the price spikes in those two minerals and it will help you understand why the price of salt cells are so expensive. The plates can be coated in different thicknesses that result in cell life from 3000 hours to 15000 hours and that is reflected in pricing as well. Some cells allow the plate housing itself to be removed and changed while others require the whole unit to be replaced.
