There always seems to be a perennial question about how water loss due to evaporation is "normal".

I was looking for some winterizing plugs for my pool this AM at Anderson Manufacturing and came across this calculator.

Not sure how exact is is but it does ask for your zip code to pull in current weather conditions in your area so there must be some sort of science and math behind it.
 
I have a spreadsheet in my signature that will calculate the total heat gain and heat loss of a swimming pool including solar panels, heaters, solar covers, evaporation, radiation, convection, conduction. The formulas and methods are completely transparent so you can see how the calculations are made as well as change the underlying assumptions. The downside is it is not as simple as the web version.
