I'm about to switch over from an old Jandy single speed filter pump to a newer Hayward VSP pump.

With the single speeds, I know to prime them that I fill the pump basket with water and hit the button. On my every day basis, the pump is on a timer to kick on at 10 am, and have never had an issue. The timer kicks the pump on, and usually after a few seconds I can see good flow from my jets/sprinklers.

With the new Hayward VSP pump, I notice that I can set the prime duration. If I never had issues with the old one priming, am I correct in assuming I won't need a long prime duration with the new pump? Also, how do I determine when it is actually primed? As soon as it kicks on and the pump basket is full?

After the pump's been off overnight, go and test it. With my pump, I have prime disabled. I don't need it. My pump basket stays full of water. The only time I really need to prime is if I open the pump basket or the plumbing. Yours may be the same way. Otherwise see how long it takes to Prime and set that as your duration.

I think I'm probably going to be in the same boat as you. When you say, "see how long it takes to prime" do you mean until I see flow out of my sprinklers? Or the basket is completely full? Or something else?
