Trying to use 2018 pentair vs motor with 2023 vs controls.

I have a good motor from 2018, that has a bad control unit. I have a good control unit from 2023 with a bad motor. They are both superflo pumps that look identical, but the 2023 head unit plug connecter is different then the 2018 motor plug. Does anybody know if the orientation is the same? I can probably change the plug connecter, but I dont want to burn anything out if the orientation is different. Oh and of coarse the wire colors are different.

What are the part numbers of the two drives?

In the SuperFlo VS product line, there is the SuperFlo VS pump manufactured before 11/20/2020, which does not have RS-485 communication ability, and the SuperFlo VST, SuperFlo VS, and Sta-Rite Supermax pumps manufactured after 11/20/2020 that have RS-485 communication ability.

The 2025-2026 Pentair Pump Parts Catalog shows the parts commonality across the product line.

I doubt it. They use different types of motors.

It is a three phase motor.

The order of wires changes the rotation of the motor.

Connect the wires and check the rotation.

The motor, looking at the back fan, should spin clockwise.

If the motor spins counterclockwise, interchange any two wires to reverse rotation.

Note: I am not 100% sure that the different motors and drives are compatible, so you do this at your own risk.

I have confirmed with Pentair that what you are wanting to do cannot be done...with the standard connectors etc. The drive and motor, pre-Nov 2020 are one package, and Post-Nov 2020 are another.

I wanted to upgrade the drive on my Pre-2020 pump, keeping the motor so I could get RS485 communication. They told me they are incompatible.

Right now, you have nothing and you have to buy a whole new pump or motor or drive.

I would connect the three wires and try it.

In my opinion, it should work.

Even if it does not work, what are you losing?

Thank you all. I cant think of why a three phase motor with only 3 wires would react any differently than another 3 phase motor with 3 wires. I am not to concerned with that, I just would like to verify the order of colors. Right now I have yellow blue red on one, and blue brown white on the other. So with blue being in the middle of one, and brown in the middle on the other, would an educated guess be that they should be swapped, then try to keep the others in the same order? What damage could come if the wires are not correct, just reverse, or could something else happen? Thanks again.

I think it should work, but there might be some reason that it will not work.

Maybe there is a voltage difference.

Check the voltage to be sure.

Measure the voltage from L1 to L2, L1 to L3 and L2 to L3.

Measure the voltage from L1 to ground, L2 to ground and L3 to ground.

You have to decide if you want to take the risk of having a problem for the chance it will work.

Show the labels from both motors.

I tried it before your last post. With same orientation on the plugs, I got reverse rotation, but sounded good. I immediately turned it off, and switched the two outside wires, and it was now going in the right direction. After 10 seconds of it sounding good, it stopped and gave me an error code of 0016. That is a bad connection, so I pushed the wires in a little harder (Just used jumper wires) and it ran better for about 10 seconds then gave me a 0019 code and stopped. That made me nervous because I got that code on another pump that had the magnets implode from the stator. So I turned it off and stopped the experiment.
