Hello! We just got a house with a hot tub and we’re very new to it. The chlorine test came out in orange chunks which makes me worry the chlorine level is dangerous. Is it? What do I do if it is? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to TFP! The chlorine level "might" be a bit high, but that would also depend on the stabilizer level. In addition, the test reagents might come into play (i.e. age, storage, etc). Curious though, this is a "new-to-you" tub right? Have you purged it yet? If not, I would do that first. Just google Ahh-Some and do an Ahh-Some purge to eliminate any junk in the water and plumbing. No telling what was in there before. Then you can start from scratch with a clear conscience.

Here are a couple more valuable links for you to use.

Thank you! We did purge the hot tub already and clean it out, and the test kit is brand new and kept in our garage. What do you mean it might depend on the stabilizer level?

You’re fc may or may not be high in relation to your cya/stabilizer level.
If fc is anywhere between minimum & slam level for your cya on this chart FC/CYA Levels then it’s ok 👍🏻
The oto kit test that u have there only reads total chlorine levels up to 5ppm & not very accurately. It’s more of a “do i have any chlorine or not” kind of test.
It doesn’t differentiate between free chlorine-fc (good stuff- free to sanitize) & combined chlorine- cc’s (bad stuff )
To get those #’s separately you need the fas-dpd test.
What kit do u have ? You may just need to add that.
Also it doesn’t appear as if you mixed the regeant in the comparator. Invert the comparator a few times to ensure proper mixing.
