Thoughts on light pool color and dirt

Hi all,

Please tell me if you think I'm crazy to want a very light blue (fiberglass) pool color because it will show dirt? I will have an in floor cleaning system and an automatic cover. Pool guy says he "hates that color" because it shows every little thing. Every picture I see, I love it. It's very similar to white plaster basically. Just classic bright pool water. I will have glass waterline tile that I think will be amazing with it....
I know I'll love the look but I'm fearful I'll regret it if it's ALWAYS dirty.
Can anyone shed some light??

I gotta agree with the pool guy. It sure will show dirt....and looks kind of dated and cheap to me. Fiberglass pools come in such great colors now that anything white or so light is very uncommon these days.

My fiberglass pool is darker and you can still see any schmutz on the floor of the pool, so just imagine how it would look lighter? (see my pool in siggy line)

Have you considered a robot instead of the infloor system? Much cheaper and easier to fix. So many posters write in saying they don't work as promised or they've just shut them down and can't fix them. Robots are easy! I highly recommend them! Just need an outlet off the pool or equipment pad.

Thanks so much for your input! I know what you're saying and everyone is saying the same - my aunt has white plaster and she's horrified I'm leaning in this direction but I LOVE the way her pool water looks..lol...she also has no kids and keeps it immaculate. Every pool picture I see that I really like the water in.... is white or this "viking blue". It just looks so refreshing I guess...haha. My issue is that the Viking line does not seem to really have a darker/better color that I love. For example, I love your pool color - seems like a deep blue/green. It's not viking right? If yes, please tell me the finish! lol. I'm struggling so much with this color issue :(

Regarding the in-floor I've been back and forth. The pool guy and two others who have them installed them RAVING about them to me...like I'm so crazy to not get it. And pool guys says he never gets calls about them "maybe 1%" but nothing they can't fix. He also told me I didn't need to bother with automation and he could "go either way" on the auto-cover so I truly don't believe he's trying to "sell" it. At any rate, I LOVE the idea of saving this money! (plus not crazy about the "look" of all the pop ups on the bottom of the pool). Would you mind telling me more about the robot?? Thanks so much for any help!

I'm sleepless-nights-anxious about all of these decisions - my husband doesn't really want the pool so I feel a lot of pressure to LOVE it. HA!

If you get a robot you can not have a 'Pool Guy'. You handle the chemistry, the robot cleans.

Sounds like a good mix!

Our FG pool is light color (not white) so it stays cooler in the summer. If I guess right you are in Massachusetts? I would think you would want it a little darker so it warms the water more.

Have fun!

Might want to read this thread - not all in floor systems are great!

No, my pool is not a Viking pool. We love the color although we didn't pick this one either. We chose a different blue and the manufacturer got back to the pool builder and said they do "color runs" and my chosen color wouldn't be run for another month and did we mind waiting? The current color in production was x and we saw a sample and said we'd rather have x than wait for our original color. It has lovely glittery flakes in the finish that sparkle.

Robots are so cool- you plug them in and they drive themselves around picking up everything...then they climb up the walls brushing them up to the tile line/water line which saves you from that job! We have a Dolphin Discovery. I *LOVE* it! Best thing we've purchased for this pool ever!

We also have an autocover, which also limits the debris in the pool. We sprung for it for safety reasons as we have grandkids around at times. I just don't want to worry about any kid getting into the pool unintended. Its a huge weight off my mind. Our cover was by PoolCoverSpecialists and since our pool is a simple rectangle it ran us about $7500.

IF I were to pinch pennies, I'd ditch the in-floor system and get the robot and cover again, and put the savings toward my margherita machine :)

Thanks so much! I love that you guys are talking down the $5k+ cleaning system! Works for me!

Here are the three colors I've narrowed down (sorry picture is really small?) and I like lightest best. My husband, the darkest. I'm not concerned with water temp because I'll be in the spa if it's too cold! kids will swim in ice (they're very used to that at our beaches!).

If you like the lightest (far right) and hubby likes the darkest (far left) then you compromise and go for the middle one :)

Is there anything else we can help you shop for today?

You need to order the TF-100 Test kit from TFTestkits.net $70 best kit on the market, and one of the only two we recommend.

That's what I'm thinking!

Ok sure you can help me shop for tile! I'm now liking the one on the pool in the middle but I had been set on the arctic ice. I will do a blue stone-esque coping. I'd like a more rustic new england feel but i don't think that precludes the glass tile at all.

LOL Oh heck no it doesn't! In fact, I'd say the splurge on glass is a MUST since you saved so much on that in floor system!

Give us the links to look at your choices and we'll ponder them with you. I have the most glorious glass tiles in my kitchen and love glass sparkle!

It's so funny you say that about the Aqua Beryl because I do think it's really cool with the variation in each tile. I just don't know if the pool dealer will use it because they're all NPT tiles on their site.

Here's a link to all the pool colors - the finish I'm leaning towards (since just now after starting this thread :p) is the one called granite

Back to the robot. I just clicked and watched that video. That thing looks crazy!
Two questions: does it know where it's been in the pool? to not get stuck in one area? and how?! (just kidding on that one), second, do you think it could keep up with the dirt 4 kids will track in?
Thank you so much!

Our robot "Sheldon" seems to know what to do....and its kind of mesmerizing to sit and watch him and try to figure it out...but there is no rhyme or reason to my eyes on where he goes yet he seems to hit all the spots!

For a few more bucks you can get one that is controlled by your phone's bluetooth to go where you want it exactly when you want it...but I don't need that. With the autocover you debris load is already going to be decreased so save your money there.

Just trust it. They figure it out somehow and it happens.... I just don't know *how*? LOL

I keep it on a daily schedule too. You can program it to run daily for a week automatically which is handy. Then after a week I check the basket for debris and empty if needed and re-sink him again for the next go-round.

Regarding the tile- Until you know that they'll use your own chosen tile maybe you shouldn't get your hopes up too high? I'd hate for you to be disappointed and told they can only use their company tile.

Find that out pronto. Or ask if you can have someone put tile on *after* its installed?? That might be an option. I don't have any tile actually.. we don't miss it.

There are three pools with infloor systems on my block, Mine, my neighbor, and my son. Two out of the three work fine and have minimal problems. Mine is the only one that doesn't work well. There is one critical difference between the three pools. My pool is a sports/play pool, the bottom is relatively flat at 3.5,5,4. It has no deep well vs the others with a 7 or 8 ft deep well. So in my pool, without a drain at the bottom of a well, the dirt and debris is just blown around by the heads, and if it winds up at the main drain it's mostly just by accident. With a deep well, it's natural for everything heavier than water to collect at the low point (main drain) and be picked up.

Thanks for the info, chief! I'm moving in the robot direction...

So funny I was showing the pool colors to my mom this morning and she's just astounded that I like the light pool. She said "it's just so old looking"... I told her I think it's because when we were growing up all pools looked like that and I LOVED them ALL and have been wanting a pool my entire life. lol Maybe everything old is new again??

Anyway, we will be going with the "middle color above". I came across this pool tile that I am sort of liking? What do you think? (think it may be a cost savings? not sure about that)

I saw you went with the middle option. We have white plaster and I love the color - looks like shaving gel. We have a cleaner that runs every morning for a couple of hours (take it out if people are here or throw it up on the side of it is just us).

Honestly, if the filter is on and the water is being pumped through the returns, it hides a lot of the dirt on the bottom. However, I think lighter pools are better at night when being lit up with colored lights. Something else to think about.
