With the incoming 17 degree weather here in Houston, should i consider pulling the freeze plugs from all my equipment in advance or will freeze protection be enough to see me through the few cold nights?

WJ,

Well... it depends. :suspect:

The cold is not the real issue, it is the AC power.

As long as the pump is running you should be fine. But, if your pump shuts off, you will be in trouble, unless you are around to run out and drain the equipment.

If you want to be absolutely safe, then draining is the best option.

That said, I have three pools in the DFW area and all three will be running 24/7. We will see is that is a good decision later this year.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I do have a generator wired into my main panel with an interlock, but am concerned the generator may not be large enough to keep the house warm and the pool going all at once in freeze protection mode. Is there a way to reduce the freeze protection rpm to reduce energy consumption in the event of a power failure and the need to use a generator?

WJ,

The pump is going to run at whatever speed you have set for the Pool and Spa Circuits as it switches between the two.

You can set a speed for the Freeze Circuit if you want.

But.. In my mind the problem will be the pump priming when the AC goes off and the generator kicks in. You can also set pump priming speeds.

Thanks,

Jim R.
