I want to place a surge protector that will cover the entire pool subpanel. There is a 80amp double pole breaker for the main disconnect breaker, 60amp double pole breaker for heater, 20amp double pole breakers for lights and pump. I have seen the internatic PS3000, but I’m not sure if I can use it to protect everything in the subpanel or just the pump or lights on the 20amp double pole breaker. What can I use to protect all pool equipment at subpanel? Thanks!

Do you have an available 240v breaker slot on the panel to connect a full panel surge protector to? The breaker should be the first breaker at where the feed connects to the bus bar to intercept the surge before it gets into any of the breakers. Read...

Thanks! No, I do not have any available breaker slots left in the pool sub panel. The surge protectors listed in the document you sent seems to be whole house surge protectors versus if I just want to have a surge protector that is only for the pool equipment. Any recommendations? I have posted a pic of my sub panel. Thanks!

The internatic PS3000 connects in the same way through a dedicated 240V CB. All the surge protectors that protect equipment in a subpanel work that way. It does not matter if it is for a house electrical panel or a pool equipment subpanel.

You need to replace the subpanel with one with additional breaker space to add an effective surge protector.

If I connect the intermatic PS3000 to the 80Amp main disconnect breaker in the pool sub panel, would that provide me with enough coverage if I did get an electrical surge until I have enough time to add a larger sub panel box?

It is not recommended to connect more then one wire to a CB. Especially a high amp feeder CB.

Do you have an 80 Amp CB at the other end of the subpanel feed also? If so, I think you can eliminate the main disconnect breaker and connect the wires directly to the bus bar screws at the top. Then I would swap the breakers at left on the box to put the now empty breaker on top. Then you can connect the surge protector to the empty breaker.

The inconvenience will be you need to go to your main panel to cut all power to the subpanel before working on it. Which you should really do anyway.

Our Intermatic PS3000 was installed some 3 yrs ago in the same manner as shown here.
The pool subpanel is consists of the following;
(1) 20A double pole breakers for the 2HP Spa Jet pump
(1) 20A double breaker shared between the NG heater and VS900 filter pump
(1) 10A breaker for lights and swcg.
