7-year old pump failed today with pump stalled error. Gonna try Hayward tomorrow, but based on some initial googling looks like I need a replacement.

My pool is around 17k gallons. I see that the Hayward has 2.7hp. Do I need equivalent horsepower in a new unit, or is that not the way to think about it?

I'm willing to pay a bit more for power efficiency.

Any guidance appreciated! I've had my pool for 7 years, but only recently started maintaining it myself.

Welcome to the forum.
The Hayward Tristar VS should fit without changes. Get the 2,7 hp version, it will use less electricity and will be quieter than lower hp models.

Thank you sir! And nice to meet you.

I'm a bit unsure as I'm getting some conflicting advice across pool pros. One guy is telling me a 2.7hp pump is way overkill for my pool, and that rings true to me since by my attempted calculations, at 17k gallons with 2.5 inch piping, my min flow rate is around 35 and the max is something like 120. He's recommenting the 1.5 hp Pentair Superflo VS.

Other two are telling me to go with the bigger horsepower pumps and then just dial back the RPMs to save on electricity. However, that's about $600 more expensive, and not sure why I would actually be using much less power with a bigger hp pump dialed back vs a 1.5 hp running higher rpms.

If I could nail the flow displacement part of the calc I'd be more confident, but even short of that, the lower hp pump seems like plenty.

Any additonal thougts greatly appreciated. Gotta get back running soon!

P.S. - I have no jacuzzi - just the pool.

There is no such thing as too big of a VS pump. They are variable horsepower. So the lower rpm, the less electricity. So a 3 hp VS pump will use less electricity and will be much quieter than a 1.5 hp moving the same amount of water.

Get a 1.5 hp VS pump. It will save you some upfront.
