Suddenly The skimmer is not pulling any water into it.

I have an in ground 14 x 28 pool that is about 15 years old. I have been maintaining it myself and am running a salt generator. All of a sudden, I find that the water is not being pulled into the skimmer. I checked for blockage and there is none that I can see. I have back washed twice and rinsed.. I am showing about 14 # of pressure which is normal. The pump reservoir is full of water and looks normal as well. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

Dino:

Assuming you have another skimmer or at least a main drain. If the weir door is not sticking, then it could be a clog in the line, not necessarily near the skimmer. Try using air to move water, both ways and you will probably clear the line of any debris that is causing the blockage. It does not take much debris to create a clog, especially in small plumbing. Good luck and keep us posted!

Dino,

When you say the skimmer is not pulling any water into it... what do you mean? Is it just that the skimming action is not working, or is there no suction at the port at the bottom of the skimmer? It sounds like the pump is working fine, so obviously, water has to be coming from somewhere.. Do you have more than one skimmer? Is your main drain connected to a skimmer, or is it connected to a valve at the equipment pad??

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thank you for the replies...I do not have a main drain and only have one skimmer. I know that water is being pulled from the pool, but the skimming action is not working. I am guessing that the "weir door" is the flap on the skimmer opening? How does that supposed to work?

Remove the skimmer basket. Take a vacuum plate (if you have one) and place in the skimmer. Immediately you will see a Venturi effect. Drop a small leaf and see if it gets sucked in. If so, your skimmer is working. If not, then lift the door that is part of the skimmer in the pool up and down until you see movement. The door is easily visible from inside and pool (lean over & peak down).

You would have little to no pressure and air coming out of the returns and in the basket if no water was being pulled in.

Dino,

Good skimming action requires two things.. One is an operating weir door and the other thing is the proper water level.

You should try to keep your water level about halfway up the skimmer mouth. The higher the water, the less skimming action you will get.

The weir door makes it appear that the water in the skimmer is lower than the water in the pool. Since water flows "downhill" you will visually see water flowing into the skimmer mouth and over the weir door. Without the weir door, the water in the skimmer is the same level as in the pool, so you don't see much "flow"... The weir door is hinged at the bottom and floats on the water.. If it gets stuck up, you will see your skimmer empty of water.. If the door gets stuck down, or no longer floats, you will not get any skimming action.

The weir door also helps keep stuff in the skimmer from flowing back into the pool.

Thanks,

Jim R.
