Moved from here.
took some tips from the thread to get my Hayward lid off and replaced o-ring.
I have a strap wrench and it was too tight to get it loose.
I poured hot water from the tap(mine is hot enough to steam a little),
I used a nylon hammer that I had, held the lock tab and tapped the wrench points on the lid.
after I got a turn and 1/2, I was able to finish unscrewing the lid by hand.
Using tips I found here, after cleaning all surfaces, I lubed the grove and o-ring with silicone grease I found in the plumbing department at home depot.
I sprayed the inner and outer threads on the lid with Pam spray and by hand, carefully screwed it on to avoid cross threading.

This is often usually caused by over-tightening the lid after the locking tab breaks off. The lid actually doesn't need to be tightened down too much. Awful design, though - I go through at least one o-ring a year! Thankfully, the generic ones are pretty cheap on ebay.
