I have a Hayward Sand Filter with the six-port valve on top, one of which is Rinse. The manual says to RINSE after BACKWASH. I have read a few threads where occasionally the tech opens the top of the filter to perform a flush or stir...using a stir and a water hose....and you see leaves/debris coming out the top. I guess this is cleaning out debris on the top of the filter.....

My question: does the RINSE feature in my six-port valve eliminate the need for this periodic task? I sure hope so. Just one less thing to do :)

I believe you are referencing a 'deep clean' which should be done once a year as good practice. Rinse does not save the need to deep clean.

"Rinse" allows dirty water that is in the sand bed after a backwash to be sent to waste instead of the pool as the sand bed is re-compacted.
A good backwash "liquifies" the entire sand bed to remove the dirt that get embedded, but it never gets it all out.
If you go directly from backwash to filter, you will almost always see a cloud of dirt coming from a/all return lines. Even after a backwash it happens at times, but is a smaller amount, nothing to worry about.
