Stair return leak - opinion on working solutions?

First opening on MDW, since home purchase late last summer, and after replacing the old 24 sqft Hayward Micro-Clear DE with a 36 sqft Hayward ProGrid DE, we had noticeable water loss the next day, ~0.25 inches per hour. Over the next few days, observed that the water loss was not occurring while the equipment was off, so we directed attention to plumbing. After isolating different lines, it seems that one (or both) of the return lines at the stairs is the cause of the leak. Pool has two skimmers, MD / two wall returns and two stair returns. We have had both stair returns shut off from the jandy at the equipment pad since and noticed no appreciable loss, unrelated to evaporation.

Does anyone see any issues with this? Trying to avoid costly leak detection/repair if it's not necessary at this point.

The two returns should be adequate for circulation if you leave your stair returns off.
